How do you not overeat a Sunday roast?

When everything is so delicious. And there’s often a hot pudding with custard. Or am I just greedy? I love the veg as much as the salty, fatty stuff.

Sunday roast isn't too bad if there's plenty of veg?

It is if you're having goose fat roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, veggies roasted in oil and not exercising any restraint!

(and honestly, is there any other way to do a roast??!)

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 05/11/2023 18:50

Just don't cook one. I've never had a Sunday roast in my life. They're not a thing in Scotland.

No. No, there isn’t.

Don't you dare tell my Scottish inlaws this, or they'll think they've been doing Scottish wrong all their lives! 🤣🤣

RJnomore1 · 05/11/2023 18:57

I don’t know if you seriously want the answer but my dh does manage when he’s training for a sporting event - it’s literally scales out and weigh meat and potatoes, and plain veg… carrots Brocolli cabbage usually. No butters or oils on them.

I don’t think he’s considered the gravy…

When I lived in Scotland we certainly didn't have many roasts!

Georgyporky · 05/11/2023 18:59

Eat at my DM's !

Meat is overcooked, grey, & no idea whether it's beef, pork, or the neighbour's cat.
Veg is mushy, but if it's orange it's probably carrot; green could be a problem, it might be potatoes.

HAF1119 · 05/11/2023 19:00

Today I put less on my plate so I ate less, in particular the potatoes

And then DH went to the toilet mid meal and I stole 2 from his generous portion of potatoes.. he didn't notice, still not feeling the guilt Blush

DonPeggyJoan · 05/11/2023 19:00

God I love a good roast dinner! Limit myself to one once a month at a pub and I have EVERYTHING!!

Whu · 05/11/2023 19:01

We just eat regular meals on a Sunday. Love a roast but can’t be doing with all the faff every week or even every month. Looking forward to a huge one at Christmas though!

AdoraBell · 05/11/2023 19:03

I just stop when I’m full. That said, I’m an emotional eater and spent about 40 years overeating. Earlier this year I had a light bulb moment. Now I eat what I want to eat and no more. Also, I don’t judge anyone for eating a few kilos of roast spuds.

That's some fucked up behaviour.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/11/2023 19:04

What constitutes overeating? I eat as much as I like at meal times, full stop. I'm a bit overweight but not very. Dh's roasts are fantastic, but we only have a full one with all the trimmings once every few weeks.

HoopLaLah · 05/11/2023 19:05

Does anyone have a favourite order in which they eat their roast?

For me it’s:

roast parsnips
broccoli (unless it’s still too hot, in which case some chicken then the broccoli),
cauli (before it goes cold)
chicken
sprouts (they stay hot longer then other veg)
rest of chicken if it’s not already gone
yorkshire x 1
roasties x 4

I then declare “ooh,I love a roast dinner, best meal of the week” and also “can’t believe I ate all that” and sit waiting for the males of the household to finish theirs.

Son then offers me his uneaten roasties. And I feel upset if he’s got crunchy ones left but I’m too full to eat them, having eaten less crunchy ones from my own plate. (Hmmm, in future maybe I need to plan ahead and do swapsies at the start….)

One roast dinner a year? Hmm

I have less than that! Think my last one was maybe 6 years ago?

I’ve had many a Sunday roast in my native Scotland when growing up but mostly we’d have a steak pie or a stew instead served with as many vegetables
as possible.

Sunday roast/Sunday dinner are the same.

purplecorkheart · 05/11/2023 19:16

Get one of those portion plates and use it as a guide. Slow down when you eat. Cut the food into small bits. Take one bite and put down your knife and fork while you chew. Give your brain time to register that you are eating and you are full. Use your fork with the prongs facing downwards rather than upright. I found these so helpful when I wanted to lose weight

SallyWD · 05/11/2023 19:20

I overeat roasts (especially roast potatoes) but it's OK because I don't generally overeat other meals. It's fine to overindulge sometimes! I also never fancy pudding so that helps.

campingmama · 05/11/2023 19:21

I just sit opposite the step-kiddos.. their table manners are so grim it puts me off.. rarely sit down for a meal with them now! 🤢

Crinkle77 · 05/11/2023 19:26

Just cook what you need and no more. You can't eat what's not there.

😂 this makes me miss my Nan. I loved her to bits but my god could that woman ruin a roast.

dessertorchide · 05/11/2023 19:27

I am much better at moderation at other meals. Even buffets and BBQs (where other people often say they overeat) etc I don’t overface myself.

Maybe because cooking a roast is quite involved I feel I have to do it justice.

Today I filled the dishwasher twice with everything for cooking, serving and eating roast beef, Yorkshires, roast potatoes, carrots, sprouts, cabbage, gravy, syrup sponge and custard for the 5 of us.

You’d probably be very disappointed in our Sunday roast. Roast chicken, roast potatos with two steamed veg, carrots, peas or broccoli. Plus gravy. My children are young and love this but it’s not over-facing or a chore to prepare. Feels quite healthy really as all from scratch and tastes good. Not as indulgent as others from what I’m reading here.

ForfarBridie · 05/11/2023 20:05

@FMLWTF - I wouldn’t be disappointed. I’d just get stuck in and enjoy it.

Eating when you're no longer hungry.
