Looking for some ideas on how to celebrate winter a bit more. We have a little nature alter and I always have my salt lamp lit and my morning candle!
Anyone else do owt?

Put the heating on 🤣

Rocksonabeach · 05/11/2023 19:19

We have two sets of indoor fairy lights they come on for 8 hours (warm light) at 4 pm in the winter until 12. One is in the front lounge and one is on the hallway. In the back garden with have 300 m of warm fairy lights they come on at dusk and stay on for 6 hours.

We use hot water bottles or flick our electric blankets on before bed.

school uniform in places on radiators before getting dressed for school.

we have a daily slow cooker on or soup maker and anything not used goes in chest freezer.

we all have apply sock inserts for wellies - which stay on boot rack outside but the sock insert stays on radiators (same with riding boot inserts)

we have lovely thermal underwear it’s a dream

we have a huge box of scarves, gloves, hats, hand warmers, leg warmers, waterproof etc and high vis stuff in the hall way

the kids have at least two decent thick coats each

same for dressing gowns and slippers and Pj at least 2 pairs of each

lots of blankets and candles and plenty of dogs to cuddle

pots of tea, hot chocolate and slow cooker always on

warm baths encouraged

being cold is not an option here

I have certain wintry foods I make - lots of roasted root vegetables, stews, fruit crumbles, etc, with warming spices like cinnamon and ginger.

Candles are always lit in the evenings. I always observe Hallowe’en and light a pumpkin, even though there are no kids at home.

I tend to read a lot of ghost stories this time of year too - I tend to feel closer to the shadow side in winter.

Seeingadistance · 05/11/2023 19:34

Wear thermals, carry two hot water bottles at all times, put the clocks back an hour. Long for summer.

Draconis · 05/11/2023 19:38

Mainly through food! Soups, stews, puddings and so on.

Get the blankets out for the sofa

Compile a list of tv shows and films to watch.

Winter bedding

New books

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/11/2023 19:40

I don’t celebrate it. I crank up the heating,tt and put beach scenes on my screen savers.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 05/11/2023 19:45

Can I move in??

Where do you get your thermals from please?

astarsheis · 05/11/2023 20:44

Book a ski holiday and change the wardrobe round from summer clothes to winter for everyday and outdoor hobbies.
Crank the heating up and do sausage and mash for dinner 😁

I'll join the queue for your spare room! Your home sounds lovely.

I'm sitting in front of a roaring fire at the moment. The rug in front of it is spread with contented cats warming their tummies. There are soft blankets on the couch, one for each of us (the humans, I mean, though the cats lay claim to them daily). There's a winter scented candle burning on the mantelpiece.

On particularly frosty mornings, DH makes hot porridge for the chickens.

Same here! I generally enjoy Autumn and Winter but I'm not a fan of Christmas. Most of my enjoyment in Winter comes from lovely nutritious food. It's the absolute best time of year for cooking!

I also love getting out for a walk, even in not great weather, and enjoy not getting sweaty 😊 early nights, plenty of sleep, lots of books, lots of films and telly. Lots to enjoy!

Vinoveritass · 05/11/2023 20:55

Please can pps share some soup and stew recipes, preferably vegetarian? I need some inspiration @Lottapianos @Draconis @LunaNorth @Rocksonabeach thank you!

You might like to check out the Any Witches Here? thread in the Philosophy and Religion topic. Although I don’t post as not my beliefs, I like reading about things like celebrating the changing of the seasons and it’s a nice little corner of MN.

TotalOverhaul · 05/11/2023 20:58

Candles, the occasional log fire, red berry, dogwood and cotton branches on display instead of fresh flowers. Lots of soups and casseroles and warming food. Thick blankets on the sofa to wrap up in. Light lots of low lamps and stock up on novels to read. I like winter.

Guibhyl · 05/11/2023 21:01

I go to bed really early in winter. Sounds a bit sad but it can feel a real treat! DH and I try to eat with the DCs and do all the clearing up and chores before they go to bed (ours go to sleep quite late despite being young). I often get into bed as soon as the DC are asleep. I’ll read my book, have a hot drink, maybe some chocolate. Watch some Netflix on the iPad if I feel like it. Saves on heating bills too!

Vinoveritass · 05/11/2023 21:03

I also do the early nights, view it as a treat too. In bed now and ready to meditate then sleep

Acorncat1 · 06/11/2023 18:13

@Rocksonabeach I've booked the ferry and am on my way..
I love these ideas. We have to wait till the New Year to get a stove fitted and husband is putting laminates down upstairs so it's a bit of a bombsite here.
Can I ask for recommendations of really cosy, under 80 pounds??
I do hop on the witchy thread sometimes and love it too!
Thank you all!

I celebrate by moaning and whinging and maybe even crying

Me too. And I drag out my smelly-but-warm Merrell boots for another year.
