Horror I witnessed last night NHS

At 3pm yesterday I took my 88 yr old mum to hospital as she had an unexpected, sudden anaphylactic reaction to one of her meds and her tongue and throat swelled up to the extent she was struggling to breathe/talk/ swallow. I drove her there because I knew the ambulance wait can be hours.
I witnessed pure absolute carnage. I worked for the wonderful NHS for 30 years and yesterday I had first hand experience of the struggles the poor staff. I have never seen such a horrendous sight of so many trollies with extremely sick and dying patients lining the corridors. I couldn’t begin to count them but there were dozens and dozens. It’s only early November, I can only say, for your own sakes, unless you have a life threatening condition, do not go to A&E.
The staff were absolutely brilliant but there’s not enough of them. The care and kindness they showed us amazing. DM didn’t join the trolley queue as her airways were compromised so we went to the observation ward where she has stayed on a trolly overnight. All A&E wards were rammed to capacity with people not even having their own bay, they were just squeezed into any available space.
Once mum had steroids and anti histamines and she stabilised ( because they were working at full speed to treat other patients) the staff simply didn’t have to time or capacity to help mum. She was offered no water, no blankets no food ( her tongue swelling had gone down a little and she hadn’t eaten all day ). You can see by the tone of my post I am no way being critical of the fantastic medical team , they were pushed to the limits. I don’t really know the point of this thread except to say I am so worried what’s going to happen when winter starts properly.

Thank you NHS but you too need looking after too because you are really broken and sick

Thank the Tories. They are bringing it to its knees so they can convince the public to let them sell it off to their pals.

Fifireee · 05/11/2023 07:50

All the tories care about is selling our data to the highest bidder. I hope your mum is ok x

J3llycat · 05/11/2023 07:50

We need an election now, if not sooner. Hope your mother is feeling better 💐

My lovely Dad was taken in with a suspected stroke this week. They were very good at dealing with the emergency part but once that past it was awful. The staff were kind and did their best but it was like being in a war zone.

Lamelie · 05/11/2023 07:53

100% agree @sparklefresh but @ElisabethZott what can we do? Genuine question. Obviously vote the torrid out but until then?
Hope your mum is ok Flowers

yummyscummymummy01 · 05/11/2023 07:55

That said we also have a less urgent walk in centre and when I took my little girl to have stitches it was amazing.

lljkk · 05/11/2023 07:56

Would you way where this was, OP, what hospital?

Sarahconnor1 · 05/11/2023 07:56

My partner is a paramedic. Friday night queuing up for 6 hours to hand over a patient at hospital A. He later went to hospital B and it was quiet. Both had A & E departments. Having just a little organisation would have spread that load. Funding is of course an issue, but it won't make any difference until there is reform and better management and organisation

Haveyouseenthemuffinman · 05/11/2023 07:57

I agree - was with my dad with heart issues. He was in a trolley in the corner of the corridor next to the staff changing room. They’d managed to get two trolleys there, the other was a very sick older lady.

it isn’t war zone (because I keep thinking about those hospitals in Gaza) but it’s bloody awful.

RudolphTheRedNosedSpaniel · 05/11/2023 07:57

GE now!!! 🤬😤

MrsNandortheRelentless · 05/11/2023 07:59

Similar situation except the staff were awful, neglectful and didn’t have an ounce of empathy or kindness between them.
I was embarrassed but mostly so so sad about this.
What has it come to. Long time nurse here too, I couldn’t believe it.

Also couldn’t believe that someone who needed a plaster for a cut on their finger would attend A&E then complain extremely loudly in the public waiting room that they had been waiting for 5 hours while raiding the vending machine for tea and chocolate… I kind of get why the staff were like emotionless machines when dealing with this shite.

StarShipControl · 05/11/2023 07:59

I've used a&e recently. Our wait time was 7 hrs just for initial consultation. We were there for 11 hrs altogether for a pretty straightforward incident.

RichPetunia · 05/11/2023 07:59

My mum went to A&E recently. She said the staff time is taken up by drunks and people who are high who have been brought in by police. Their behaviour and attitude towards staff was awful.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 05/11/2023 07:59

It’s beyond horrendous now in the nearest A&E to me. Much worse than when I worked in a District General in the early 90’s.

TolkiensFallow · 05/11/2023 08:00

@yummyscummymummy01 I go to a&e a lot as part of my job and it’s always like this - I once commented to an ex army officer colleague that it felt a war zone and he said “no it isn’t, our war zone hospitals are well staffed and well resourced”. His comment has never left me.

Danikm151 · 05/11/2023 08:03

What doesn’t help is that a lot of walk in centres are either closed or are now urgent care but you need to call 111 for an appointment. In Birmingham anyway.
if there’s no appointment you have to go to a&e.
the system is overwhelmed

Spudlet · 05/11/2023 08:05

FiL had a suspected stroke in summer - it took 4 hours for an ambulance to arrive. He was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, and has since been referred to palliative care but has heard nothing from anyone beyond when he makes a GP appointment himself. His sons are staying with him in shifts at the moment to look after him. We have no idea what to expect as a family, or what we should be planning for.

The Tories have broken the NHS. May they rot for it.

BitofaStramash · 05/11/2023 08:09

It's the same in Scotland where the NHS is run by the SNP so can't blame the Tories here.

It's completely broken and needs radical change.

CharlotteRose90 · 05/11/2023 08:10

I think it depends what you go there for and what area. Over the last month I’ve been to a&e 4 times and it’s never been the way you describe. I’ve never had to wait longer than 4 hours either. Mines a big hospital in the northwest and thankfully we have plenty of staff and beds.

ElisabethZott · 05/11/2023 08:11

Thank you for your good wishes for my DM
I am in a town in Cheshire
At ten o’clock the abusive drunks started to come in and the police were called.
It was like a third world country- people bleeding , people on oxygen struggling to breathe, elderly people looking like they were dying on their trollies with no one with them

First reply was straight in there with "Thank the Tories"

The government spends about £200bn a year of YOUR money on the NHS. Do you think an extra £50bn will fix it? Or £100bn?

If so, great, but be prepared for some hefty tax hikes after the next GE.

Same in Wales, where health is devolved and run by the Welsh Government, which has been Labour or Labour + Plaid Cymru since devolution.

lljkk · 05/11/2023 08:14

Adult DD got seen in about 2.5 hours in a London hospital recently. She did faint which maybe helped. Kidney infection, btw. Went home same night. Had a nice boyfriend who looked after her.

Badatthis · 05/11/2023 08:15

I had to go in recently. Half the waiting room was people asking for antibiotics because their gps wouldnt see them. And those people brought 6 family members with them for some reason.

Yep and where I live it was Labour that closed all the A n E services and then gloated about it. Not quite sure I want those in either to finish off what they started. Who else is there?
