Think I have this in my left foot.
It started this morning and is bloody painful.
Any advice on what I should be doing to help it please?

Stretch out your heels by standing on the tips of your toes on the stairs, and lowering your heels to below toe level.

Massage your feet with a frozen bottle of water by rolling it under your feet.

Go and buy a pair of Haflinger grizzly felt clogs/ slippers with the cork and rubber soles, and never go barefoot on hard ground again. Anywhere. Ever.

Great advice above. But I never found icing or massaging the area helped with pain. That was only cured by wearing massage flipflops. I bought cheap ones on Amazon but if you want chic ones, Fitflop do them.

never go barefoot. And if you are overweight, lose weight. Mine vanished when i lost weight and came back a bit when I regained it.

Get lace up shoes with high backs or gel inserts to go in your current shoes and roll a tennis ball under your arches. I second the stretches pp mentioned! I got it after both of my pregnancies and these things worked for me to get rid of it

how long did it take for the pain to disappear if you eg did once walk around barefoot a lot but then bought slippers?

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 04/11/2023 22:29

For me, the exercises made it go away; the slippers eased the pain, and once it had gone, made sure it didn’t come back.

I’m allergic to aspirin and anti-inflammatories
of all descriptions. I don’t know if other people found those topical painkillers and anti-inflammatories helpful.

Tidypidy · 04/11/2023 22:30

See, I've tried inserts for my shoes and the stretching/ rolling a ball exercises but what has helped the pain most for me is walking barefoot or in socks at home and wearing Doc martens boots when out. Any really flat shoes or ones with stiff heels are so uncomfy. Something with a slight heel or wedge seems most comfy for me.

Best advice, is not the common one of standing on toes, but instead roll your toes the other way and stretch top of foot. It will fix it very fast if not immediately.

Sorry you have this. A clue that it is PF is the pain is worse when you first put your feet onn the floor after resting. Anti inflamatories help if you can take them, I can't. All that helped me was feet elevated on ice packs. Footwear that helped me were gel insoles and memory foam insoles in regular shoes and a pair soft foam rubber slides/mules I picked up for watering the yard in. Finally I cracked and did what I never thought I'd do and got some croc knock offs. I wear them all the time with memory foam insoles, not in public though. I wear Sketchers if I go someplace.(I go nowhere anyways)
It lasted two years but was only bad at the beginning before I began with the cold packs ect.
"They" say the 4 F's get it most...fair, fat, female and 40.
Which was quite accurate in my case.

grayhairdontcare · 05/11/2023 15:05

Thanks for all your tips.
I've ordered sketchers, crocs and the slippers that were recommended and also started on the exercises everyone has recommended

When I had it, compression socks really helped with the pain.

Britviv · 06/11/2023 19:03

I had this on one foot for four months. I'm sure it was caused by walking some distance in flip flops. Tried absolutely everything. Icing, exercise, foot massage with heat. Nothing seemed to work. What did eventually help was buying a pair of Strive shoes which have arch support. The improvement was immediately better. Also at night I stuck a Jointace Patch on the bottom of my foot with a sock over it to secure. Available at Holland and Barrett. You will get better eventually remember that.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/11/2023 19:08

I tried so many things. The stretching works, but I learned (eventually!) that it's no good being half-hearted about it. You have to do it properly and often. I actually ended up going a bit beyond the recommended stretches and doing a short sequence of yoga stretches designed for after a run. I did it several times a day. Also, always wear Crocs around the house.

verrymerryberry · 06/11/2023 19:21

I had this for 9-12 months it got better after 9 months the and then "fully" better after 12. I still get tightness occasionally after swimming.

I've had it sporadically in the past after. Day of walking (usually in flat sandals) but it's always worn off after a day or so. This time it stayed. I remember those agonising steps in the morning. Icy bottle (glass one is better don't fill it), co odamol ibuprofen and stretching. I also started some pretty intensive swim g in April and not sure if this helped or not. I wore trainers at work and still find them better.

Tried gel inserts and a support and both a waste of money!

I also had a heated shiatsu foot massager! Nice but not helpful!

I am the 4 Fs. My right foot has been bad for about 2 years. I need to loose weight 😫

Stretching first. Rolling a ball under your sole next. Western medical acupuncture for me after that - and it does actually hurt. The only time acupuncture does for me.

MojoMum · 06/11/2023 20:44

I spoke to an NHS podiatrist about PF recently and also about a painful joint in my big toe. She said under no circumstances wear Skechers, even the arch support ones, which is a shame as I've just bought two pairs of these! She said skechers are too bendy in the front of the shoe and this leads to the toe over extending. Said it was like wearing slippers outside, not enough support. She recommended crocs for around the house as they are firm and have a heal strap. Running trainers with firm sole. Walking shoes/boots with firm support and small heel. No flip-flops of any description and also advised against any exercise that involves going up on your toes or extending the toe such as yoga or pilates (which surprised me). HTH.
