What does 'turtle neck' mean to you?

Just curious about others' thoughts on this, as I've been searching for (male) turtle-neck jumpers on M&S, Uniqlo and Next, and all the results are what I would call "polo neck", not "turtle neck". To me, turtle neck is no more than about an inch in height, and ideally just a single layer (not folded over).

Update: H&M gets it right.

To me, turtle neck and polo neck are exactly the same.

From a distance looks like a polo neck but it just has one thick ribbed layer rather than folding over as two layers.

I’m with you OP - I like them as they’re less restrictive around the neck than a polo neck!

Not sure about only an inch high, but definitely no way you could fold a turtle neck down, imo.
I'd say they are often ribbed too, but not essential.

Looks like it may be an Americanism ...

Turtle neck are as you describe, OP. Necks that fold over are either called roll neck or polo neck. Though knit tops with a collar and 3 buttons are called polo shirts which is confusing.

A turtle neck for me is something that happens before a shoulder dystocia. A message that things are about to get a bit scary. This will give my job title away!

Didn't know it also meant a style of jumper!
