Rejoining the NHS

Has anyone got any experience of rejoining the nhs and getting paid the same pay as when you left? Bit of context I left the nhs 5 months ago to work in HE after 15 years service. I now have a job offer to return to the nhs same field I have always worked in and with an old
manager who knows my skills etc. is it likely I’ll go back as top band 6 since I’ve only been out 5 month? I’ve also worked back every month as a top 6 so have payslips to evidence this
TIA

Can't you negotiate it? I'd assume they'll do they can to get you back?

On a side note, why did you leave and why are you returning? I'd have imagine leaving after 15 years probably means you didn't want to do it anymore. What's making you return?

Depends on the role and how keen they are to fill it.
the bank work won’t help the cause because all bank staff get paid top of band.
if you were top of band previously and only been out 5 months they can put forward a business justification request and in my trust if you were a nurse it would be approved.

Were you band 6 before? Our trust HR policy is you start bottom of band until you build up the years experience, I think 5 months out would essentially be a gap in continual service so they would put you at bottom of band automatically. Recruitment is such a nightmare at the moment your likely in a good position to negotiate, definitely ask to go to top of band as a condition of your acceptance for the role.

I left to try a post in higher education it’s something I shears wanted to try but I’m missing clinical practice and the culture is so different I’m not enjoying it. Thanks for your reply

I was top band 6 since 2019 when I left. I did get a job offer a couple of months ago and they had no problem putting me back at the top of my band so hopefully this trust will be the same. Thanks for everyone’s replies

Not in this Trust. Bank get paid bottom of band.

Bank get paid at the bottom of band at my trust too. In fact when I briefly did bank and was at the bottom of band 7 I'm sure I got paid less that my usual hourly wage!

OP recent experience in my team is that when returning to the NHS you get put back at the bottom of your band. I hope you're right at that the fact that you've only been away for 5 months will work in your favour. Good luck!

I think it's negotiable and something you can discuss with them.
