Pre-teen birthday party present etiquette.

DS has been invited to his first high school birthday party (year 8). Towards the end of primary, there weren't really parties, just small get togethers with his closest friends - eg a movie or something - and quite often the parents would all do a quick whip round and someone would either liaise with the parent to buy a single larger gift or stick it all in an envelope for the birthday person.

Clearly I now know NONE of the parents to get a sense! Grin

I'm thinking we shove a tenner in a card? Does that sound right?

For context, we're in a bog standard middle class (not wealthy, definitely more on the "getting by") part of Surrey (on the London border). DS is at a large state school and his friends all seem to be roughly similar to us in terms of type of lifestyle etc.

Yeah my first thought was a tenner in a card. A box of celebrations wrapped up to go with it if it's a closer friend.

Yes, money in a card. Mine is Y6 and I've started doing this. Who knows what kids this age like! I'd rather them choose something for themselves.

Tenner in a card is perfect. If I'm feeling generous I sometimes get them to stick a fun size bag of Maltesers to the front too!

I like the idea of some chocolates to go with it. Thanks all. Feel reassured I'm not going to be "stingy" parent! DS, bless him, did suggest we buy the friend a football as he's a big football fan. But I did ask him if HE would want his friends to buy him a football and he wasn't sure! Grin

DD gave proper presents for her closer friends as she knew what they liked. But yes, otherwise chocolate and £10.
