Does attendance matter in pre school?

Ds is 3 and attends pre school 3 days a week.

He took 2 days off to go on holiday a few weeks ago and now he's got a chest infection and will be his 3rd day off this week. I'm worried as it's only the start on winter and no doubt there will be a few more occasions he's unwell.

Do schools care about attendance in pre school/ nursery?

No

Yes and no.

Obviously you're not fined and preschools are aware children get ill often. Keep them informed and send them when you can.

However very excessive absence can result in funding being pulled by the Local Authority so the nursery might be keen to make sure that doesn't happen or you might end up being asked to pay for their space.

Very rare occasions, terrible attendance can be a safeguarding flag and may be reported as such. However what you describe is nothing like that.

Mine doesn't as long as I call/email to say that DS isn't coming in and why.

They like to know if a child is sick so they can monitor how many other children are coming down with the same thing. Too many sick kids at the same time with the same thing means a deep clean is required.

All the above posts have pretty much covered it. I work in early years and we have to chase up absences as a safeguarding responsibility but we completely understand that illness happens (and would rather they did stay home!)

No it doesn’t matter but as you’ve signed up to the nursery then you need to phone and explain why he won’t be in.

my early years centre would phone up to see where a child is if they were absent due to safeguarding so a quick phone call to the nursery stops that.
