broken little toe - drs or DIY rest etc?

Broke my little toe yesterday (heard a crack), it's now turned purple, swollen and it hurts. Thinking to leave it as online advice seems to be rest/elevation etc.

Is it worth seeing a dr if they are just likely to advise the above?

Slightly worried in case it can lead to a blood clot in the system somewhere.

WWYD?

Me personally, when I've broken toes, I've just rested and iced them. Never seen a doctor. I think the advice is usually just self-care at home unless it's clearly a complex fracture - bone through skin or clearing misaligned and needing to be re-set, or if you are in so much pain that you need pain management. I've always just left them and rested and they've healed fine on their own. I think this is generally the advice you'd get from a GP unless there was some obvious reason they needed to x-ray and investigate more.

Can’t do anything so just rest and raise.

I tend to leave mine alone but I tend to do it at least once a year

minor injuries to check it's not displaced.
but if it's aligned then RICE for a few days.

You need to go for an x ray. A broken toe won’t necessarily heal by itself. The bone is very small and may be mis-aligned or broken into fragments. Your bone may need pinning together, or you may need it manipulated to line the bone back up and then taped in position. If you let it heal crooked you’ll suffer pain for the rest of your life.

Good point about misalignment check, thank you.
Slightly worried it could be the case as when gently moving it, even in bed, there is a very sharp pain.
Will go to walk-in centre...

Will go to walk-in centre... Smile Not on foot, I hope. Get it checked ASAP.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/11/2023 15:39

I'm glad you're going to the walk in centre OP. I broke my little toe last year and didn't bother getting it checked out and I was still having pains in it even a few months ago. I've since broken my foot so that has taken over from the little toe with things to worry about.

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 02/11/2023 15:41

When DS broke his big toe I took him to the walk-in and the nurse just looked at it and said there was nothing she could do, and he was just to rest and not do any sport etc until had healed.

He's broken his toes several times since then and we haven't taken him to a GP or walk in. They can't do anything.

My GP wouldn't even see me for a broken rib, and just said take painkillers and only call them if I was having breathing difficulties.

YogaLite · 02/11/2023 16:09

I think breathing difficulties is a risk if a clot started travelling through the system which is also my concern...
