I wish nothing but health and happiness to both mum and baby but I can't imagine being up to my elbows in all the newborn stuff in my early 50s.

At that stage I hope to be taking a lover, or writing strongly worded letters to my local newspaper. I might alternate these hobbies.

Oh sanctimonious ones, wind your necks in. We can wonder without expecting to be provided with the answers to our wonderings.

I'm late 30s and have been in the depths of despair thinking motherhood has passed me by...but then I read this story (and Hilary Swank and others recently) and it seems that maybe there's still a chance for me too. No one would bat an eyelid or even think to mention it if it were a 51 year old father.

I hope your dream comes true for you Flowers

My husbands gran had one at that age. She thought her periods had stopped due to menopause. Bit of a shock when the dr told her she was 6 months pregnant!
My husband is the same age as his uncle.
Definitely not something I would want to be doing though.

Why not combine them and write letters to the local newspaper about your lover? I imagine it would be more interesting than gripes about recycling.

🤣🤣🤣

Aydel · 01/11/2023 20:06

A friend of mine had a surprise baby at 50. It was more of a shock as she had had several rounds of IVF when younger and had resigned herself to being childless.

TulipOH · 01/11/2023 20:15

Heck! Brave woman, I'm 39 and feel 60.

Congrats to her though!

ChristmasQuestions · 01/11/2023 20:17

Oh that's lovely news. We are huge VCM fans in our house. Wishing them all lots of love and a swift recuperation.

That must gave been lovely! If knackering. 😊

BeaLola · 01/11/2023 20:38

Lovely news - I think Laura Linney had her first baby at 49/50 ?

I hope Barbara is super excited being a big sister

Love to them all

I thought she looked plump & busty.

Are you the editor of an old-fashioned top-shelf magazine?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 01/11/2023 20:59

God I had no idea she was 51! I would have said 45 at the most.

Good luck to them both. I'm 40 and couldn't face a baby but fair play. They can afford help which makes a huge difference.

icantchangetime · 01/11/2023 21:50

Am I the only one thinking it's madness to have children in your fifties?

I had concerns being near 40 and DH 45 in not wanting to be too old when the kids would be in late teens and early twenties.

They'll be 70 with a teenager.

LovelyDaaling · 02/11/2023 06:21

She'll probably have a nanny to make life easier. Good luck to her.

I think it is highly unlikely she didn't use donor eggs.

Almondmum · 02/11/2023 06:28

I'm so surprised there are 3 threads on this.

I don't mean that as a criticism of the op who presumably didn't know about the other 2. I'm just really surprised by how this person's pregnancy at 51 has captured the interest of so many mumsnetters.

She'll be given her own board on here next like the royal family!

thelonemommabear · 02/11/2023 06:29

She has given birth rather than used a surrogate)

Chances her child is actually her genetic child is virtually zero though!

1% chance of natural pregnancy so 1 in a 100 people who are 50 can get pregnant! Could well be natural!

1% chance of pregnancy doesn't = 100% chance of a baby.

I’m in exactly the same situation and tbh I think these sort of celebrity stories are very unhelpful to us.

We’ll likely never know if this was own egg IVF, donor egg IVF, or much less likely, natural unassisted conception and Victoria just had an excellent AMH / egg reserve, but whichever it is it doesn’t increase my chances knowing that this happens to rich celebrities who can pay for whatever help necessary and I think it gives false hope.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 02/11/2023 06:47

Odds of natural conception at 50 seem very mixed I found your 1% statistic but also found this:

So who knows ?

Nannyfannybanny · 02/11/2023 06:49

Had my last at 41, I don't regret her. It was my easiest pregnancy. Second marriage other DD was 21,had her first baby the following year. I regret being so old,I am now older than her partners grandparents,it feels uncomfortable. A year ago I was fighting fit, now have long Covid and no way would I be able to look after her one year old!

Pushkinini · 02/11/2023 07:00

She's the same age as me. Fair play to her but there's no way I'd want to be looking after a newborn and running around after my own toddler in my 50s.

All2Well · 02/11/2023 07:31

@BlackThumb I find it helpful because I am open to other ways of becoming a mother, as much as I'd love a biological child, I know I could also love a child who wasn't mine biologically but I was feeling like maybe I'm too old already. So for me this does give hope.

@Neurodiversitydoctor Whether she used donor eggs or not, she is still the child's mother.

Loubelle70 · 02/11/2023 07:33

Same age as me, i wouldn't because its my time now, but i think its great. Good luck to them

BlackThumb · 02/11/2023 07:56

@All2Well im in the middle of the donor process at the moment…. I won’t be able to afford it more than once!

im sure Victoria could…
