Teenage DD needs a new coat - AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

DD13 needs a new coat. She WANTS A BLACK PUFFER type, I've said it needs to be suitable for school, must have a hood. We are on a budget (ish), I've said I'm happy to spend £50 or thereabouts and have seen, with my own eyes, PLENTY of black puffer style jackets that all look that same.

So far we've had - too short (cropped, anyone?) too expensive, too worn (when looking at vinted). Ones I've sent her all look the same as what she likes, but she's said no. She won't go to generic places such as new look or TK Maxx, I've found some on JD sports that would be perfect but she's said she doesn't like them even though they all look the same!!! Took her into sports direct and she stood in the shop, filled with black puffa jackets, and said she didn't like any of them. I'm just about ready to scream.

DD is allergic to coats. She went out in the last bad storm to school in a hoodie and a cheap brolly. It does my head in. She seems impervious to cold or even getting wet though, which is weird.

I recently bought a navy raincoat from Very for £35 and I've put it on account to pay it off on payday. Now all I i have to do is convince DD to wear it.

Have you looked on M&M direct? I got a few bargains off there couple of weeks ago.

BeckhamSeven · 01/11/2023 20:40

I got one (a long one) from Zara either last year or the year before and it's fantastic!!! I'm not usually a Zara fan but would recommend their coats

Escapetofrance · 01/11/2023 20:43

Another vote for Vinted. I just bought my teen dd a fantastic, like new, Zara, parka coat for £10.

TheMoth · 01/11/2023 20:47

Dd is yr7. Think hers is mountain warehouse about 40quid. Black, puffy, will soak up rain like a sponge. But apparently she'll take a brolly. She has about a 40 minute walk.

I think I had a cotton nafnaf one at her age, so I'm saying nothing.

TheMoth · 01/11/2023 20:50

The coat.

It’s not easy. My dd wanted a superdry short puffa with furry hood a few years ago. Got it, after a while wouldn’t wear it as hood apparently too furry.
Then it was a Jack Wills short puffa with no furry hood, wouldn’t entertain North Face as “everyone has them”. 🙄
This year she seen the light a bit and asked for something a bit longer with a cosy lining that will keep her dry, so I found the perfect one in Hollister which she has already worn several times….hurrah!!
Glad you got it sorted OP!!

Zara and pull&bear do nice ones for around your budget. Can't really go wrong there. I have the pickiest 12 year old and both places had winners online

pumpkinpink · 01/11/2023 21:07

Can to recommend the Urban Outfitters one above, got it for my my DD, 15. She wanted north face but they are so expensive! This one is great, warm, not too short and has a hood. Not massively weatherproof but better than the no jacket look she sported last winter.

gaggiagirl · 01/11/2023 21:16

I thought it was just my DD who behaved like this.
I'm quite teary knowing it's a common thing. I have been known to weep in sports direct over my DD hating every single pair of trainers that have ever been made in the history of the universe.......but she still wanted new trainers.

cocksstrideintheevening · 01/11/2023 21:19

In this battle at the moment. 13yo Dts would
Rather wear no coat than the wrong coat. They had expensive coats last year that were worn about three times. This year they realised they're going to get cold / wet but the specifics - black puffa, no trim on the hood, drawstring waist, short not cropped, not long....

TheaBrandt · 01/11/2023 21:23

Dh is a Vinted whizz. Dd wanted branded tracksuit bottoms £300 (snort) for her birthday - he found some for £60!

FannyFifer · 01/11/2023 21:24

I have found my people!
DD ordered the puffer coat from Pull & Bear in link above but when it arrived it is too puffy.
She has no coat, last years v expensive TNF one that she wanted, is too tight to wear over a jumper (I told her that at the time, but oh no she wanted it like that).
I have literally looked at 1000s of identical black bloody jackets & I'm losing the will to live.

TheChosenTwo · 01/11/2023 21:29

I just used to transfer the money and tell them to get whatever it was that they needed.
Dd2 had a terrible time when we went shopping for what I thought would be a nice day out for her 13th birthday. She was really into clothes so we planned a day to spend together without her siblings, lunch and a shop. It didn’t end well, she was in tears at the inability to make a single decision.
came home empty handed. Transferred her the money and she did everything online. A learning curve for both of us!
Glad you have resolved your coat issue, teens and coats are a whole different world 😂

TheChosenTwo · 01/11/2023 21:31

Actually this has reminded me that DD1 (19 and at university now) is still wearing the same black puffa jacket that she got when she was in year 9 at school 😂 she loves it but it’s an absolute state, she even admitted that there are too many holes in it now to really keep her warm!
I’m getting her the Lulu lemon wonderpuffa for Christmas, she will love it (I have one in a different colour that she’s tried on) but I still don’t think she’ll get rid of the manky one…
I did try to source the identical one to her old one to no avail.

Menmy3 · 01/11/2023 21:54

At 13 I’d just let her pick
her own x

TheFormidableMrsC · 01/11/2023 22:34

ASOS. Also check out their outlet section.

MrsNK28 · 01/11/2023 23:46

Because teenagee wants northface isnt? 🤣🤣 just give her the money and let her pick herself. Dont bother to shop with teenager. Its going to give you migraine.

Mylifesadrama · 06/11/2023 20:18

Maybe you could get her to look online and choose one herself that she likes. That’s got to be easier than constantly being told they aren’t right. Just make sure she knows her budget, and that it will be you that makes the order.

HoarHouse · 16/01/2024 11:07

Tkmaxx isn't generic, they sell Vivienne Westwood ffs.
You've tried to help her, now let her go without? you'll only reinforce the brattish behaviour.

luckmewish · 16/01/2024 11:43

Your daughter sounds nice. My just want the £180 Rab coat!!!

edwinbear · 16/01/2024 11:44

Uniglo is worth a look.
