Dehydration in pregnancy

I'm 16 weeks and experiencing severe morning sickness. I am on anti emetics but have still been sick multiple times today.

I stopped being sick around midday, and have since kept about a litre of water down. I haven't peed since 6am and have a headache and dry mouth. I know I'm dehydrated but how bad does it need to get before I need medical attention?

I am due to see an obstetrician tomorrow - do I wait and mention it or should I be going to urgent care?

I'd go in. If nothing else, you must be feeling crap. I felt so much better once I had had drips. What's the worst? They say "oh no you aren't dehydrated, your baby is fine"?

Or they say "oh yes you aren't great, we can make you feel better"

It may be that your emetic medication needs to be adjusted - different meds worked at different stages for me.

Honestly, I’d go in sooner just in case. When I eventually went it I was nearly needing the drip so it can get bad really quick.

Go to urgent care

Mawface · 01/11/2023 20:27

I'd go in. I had it twice really bad with first DS as I was sick non stop the whole pregnancy. Hope all is OK x

Could you call 111 for advice/out of hours review, assuming someone is at home with you who can monitor you? Doctor will probably want to do a urine dip to check for keytones and it would be nicer experience for you to just have to pop to a scheduled our of hours doctors appointment (even if in the middle of the night) than potentially waiting hours in A&E/maternity assessment for the same thing. Especially as they may well just say it's not bad enough and go home. And if the out of hours GP thinks the urine dip is bad enough etc they will refer you on to an appropriate service anyway.

Are you able to pee now if you go and try? Usually they expect two pees in about 12hrs , less than that is definitely a concern.

Definitely sounds like you need your meds looking at too though.

Big sympathies as I have had 2 HG pregnancies. Ice lollies gave me a lot of my fluid intake.

I experienced HG in my first pregnancy, couldn’t keep anything down, water became a struggle. I kind of soldered on, went for a check up as per my GP surgery. On receipt of my urine sample, sent straight to hospital and spent 2 days on a drip. In & out several times thereafter. If you’re due to see an ob tomorrow I would try and take any fluid between then and go from there however I’m no medical professional so if feeling unwell seek medical advice. Thankfully the HG went around 28 weeks all was fine.

Lostmumdotcom · 01/11/2023 22:40

I experience HG in my pregnancy like another commenter and it took me 3 weeks to become dehydrated enough for my GP to be able to admit me to hospital to get meds and IV fluids. I'd go in and get your urine tested and then I bought some test straps off amazon to test my own ketone levels as my hospital would only admit me for 2+ ketone in my urine.

You can have more antisickness meds, I was on 4 but past 20 weeks I couldn't take them for the baby I was told. Lost 2 stone with DD and was sick all 9 months and during labour but she came out at 8lb5oz a week late so she grew nicely. I hope you get sorted

Thanks for your replies. To be honest I went to bed, I was so drained I just wanted to sleep and not spend hours in a waiting room.

I've now peed 3x in 27 hours but haven't kept anything down since late afternoon yesterday. Attempting some toast now before I go in.

I also had HG, my urine was tested and keytones were detected so I spent a few days on a drip in hospital with anti sickness meds. I couldn’t keep any water down and hadn’t weed for a significant amount of time (days/weeks), I’m not sure how long dehydration takes but absolutely get checked out.

thecatsthecats · 03/11/2023 06:10

I had ketones detected at a routine midwife appointment and wasn't admitted, so just to warn you, not everyone views them that urgently.

Most hospitals have a threshold for how bad the keytones need to be before admission alongside the wider clinical picture of other signs of dehydration too. Just e.g. trace keytones on their own definitely wouldn't warrant an admission.
