Really overactive bladder in the mornings

Does anyone else have this problem? I get up for work about 50 mins before leaving, and in that time I have to go to the toilet 3-4 times. It's always right before I have to leave too, I've had this issue for over a year now. It calms down a bit later in the day, I'm just not sure why it's so much every morning, and part of me wonders if it's psychological too. I sometimes go once during the night, but certainly not every night.

What are you drinking in the mornings?

ThreeRingCircus · 01/11/2023 11:35

Yes, I have this but I do think for me it's psychological. I saw a women's physio who basically said that if I urinate little and often, or "just in case" then my bladder never gets used to being full and it's a viscous cycle of always feeling like I need to wee when my bladder isn't very full.

I've no real advice other than what I try to do is when I get the urge....wait a minute or sit down and do some pelvic floor squeezes. Then gradually extend the amount of time you wait before going to the toilet to 5 minutes, or 10 minutes etc.

It could be that you get slightly dehydrated overnight which makes your pee more concentrated and then it can irritate your bladder.

I would also agree with @ThreeRingCircus that it could be habit.

My physio told me that if you tense your calf muscles it reduces the urge feeling as it is the same nerve pathway as your bladder.

If you drink a lot of fluids, front load by drinking them earlier in the day rather than in the evening. You're less likely to get up in the night or need to go to the loo frequently in the morning.

Also worth ruling out diabetes if you are thirsty and go to the loo a lot.

Thank you for your replies.
I drink squash or fruit juice, don't drink any caffeine.
I have my last drink around an hour before bed, I should try to have it earlier.

I did have a diabetes test but it came back negative. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a go.

Yes Op. I'm the same. It's very awkward if you have to get up and out early. You're better than me for not drinking caffeine though.

I'm the same - I need at least three big wees before I leave the house and another while out on the morning dog walk (luckily our park has a loo!).

I have OAB and find, even when it's under control, that it's aggravated by fruit juices, particularly orange.

I take Solifenacin.

Thank you, I haven't heard of that, I will look into it.
