Just had our first trick or treaters…

…at 11.30am?! We’ve got a pumpkin out but it’s not yet lit, what with it being DAYTIME. Perhaps that was the trick. I’m irrationally furious and want my Swizzels drumstick back.

Yeh that's weird!

SirChenjins · 31/10/2023 11:57

That’s crazy! Who was it?

We’re not doing Halloween, first time in 25 years - I’m inordinately excited about not having to listen to unfunny jokes and bad singing.

Wendysfriend · 31/10/2023 11:58

I wouldn't have given out anything and told them to call back later. Maybe they have a plan of doing a 7 hour shift of trick or treating and building up their sweet stash.

How old were they? I wouldn't expect our first until 4.30 at the earliest!

northstars · 31/10/2023 12:04

That’s crazy. We had one at 3:30 pm last year and I thought that was bad!

spitefulandbadgrammar · 31/10/2023 12:06

Preschoolers and parents (who hovered on the pavement at a distance, presumably so I couldn’t glower at them). I’d happily tell older kids to go away but I’d have felt awful turning down a little kid who has been dressed up and made promises to by idiot parents.

They had full baskets though so clearly caught the WFH crowd!

If you have a pumpkin out I can't see the issue. Lots of people don't ever light them, especially after hearing of what happened to Claudia Wiklemen's daughter.

Pumpkin Out = Fine to trick or treat
No Pumpkin = Don't knock

Bibsmum · 31/10/2023 12:08

I'm hoping we don't get any trick or treaters calling and we can eat all the goodies ourselves. This year, for the first time, me and dcs have chosen stuff we actually like as last year, due to bad weather, no one came to the door and we were left with a load of chewy sweets and lollies, which none of us like!

But surely it's once it's dark!!

Allmarbleslost · 31/10/2023 12:10

Well I hope that doesn't happen here - I haven't even bought any sweets yet!

MidnightOnceMore · 31/10/2023 12:12

I think it's fine. It's Halloween today, they're only little.

Comefromaway · 31/10/2023 12:12

It's half term here so I expect younger children to come earlier, a lot of people don't like being out after dark.

I'm at work but dh is home so I decorated outside before I left this morning and left him with the sweets.

Not round here: pumpkins and decorations out the weekend before as when else do you find the time? Trick or treating only when pumpkin is lit: if the weather blows the candle out people use fairy lights or leave a porch light on. All lights off: don’t knock.

Besides which it is International Halloween Law that 11.30am is mental.

Does it matter?

I think sometimes it’s nice to loosen up.
You are ready for Halloween.
These were nursery aged children.
Given them a break (and to their parents too!).

VeridicalVagabond · 31/10/2023 12:41

My postie said "trick or treat" when he was delivering a parcel and I gave him some Maltesers and Haribo.

He'll probably be the only one, we're quite rural and usually don't get any. Despite this DH has still bought an absurd amount of treats "just in case". Hoping I can foist some off on our Amazon chap later too.

11:30 does seem mad early but maybe they're busy later or will be out with older kids so wanted the little ones to have the experience too?

CameleonAreFightingBack · 31/10/2023 12:43
Grin Now that was a really good trick and treat I think @VeridicalVagabond
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/10/2023 12:44

I’ve only just carved my pumpkin so I think I’d have told them to come back at the proper time, I.e. after dark!

Must remember: tone doesn’t exist on the internet. Of course it doesn’t matter! They knocked, I gave sweets. I’m not actually furious about the loss of a Swizzels drumstick (and I took the opportunity to trick or treat myself to one too). It’s just a bit early to put the baby in his pumpkin dress, and I thought it was odd.

Shan’t give the parents a break, I think they need to consult Debrett’s Guide to Halloween and rethink their behaviour.

I've got some reluctant sweets in, but they really can't come before 5pm/end of my work day. I'm planning a wine to help me through the evening.

Fuckeditup1 · 31/10/2023 12:50

They were really excited little kids!!! Come on!!

MidnightOnceMore · 31/10/2023 12:54

I expect the parents wanted to get the 'can we go Trick or Treating yet' out of the way!

Plus avoid the candy rush hour.

Wise parents, they can relax for the rest of the day!

MrsMiddleMother · 31/10/2023 12:54

It's half term in many parts of the country and halloween day so I don't think its unreasonable

I agree. It's going dark by about 4pm, i'm sure even the tiny ones can wait until then to come round. Halloween Grin

I have a pumpkin and decorations, but like the OP, I would be very surprised to get a knock in the morning.

mogtheexcellent · 31/10/2023 12:57

We have heavy rain predicted for between 4pm and 8pm so it would be very sensible for younger kids not at school to do a few friendly houses now.

Im currently hunting for my waders for later.Hmm
