Hi I was bullied in school so never sat my GCSEs I did do level 1 and 2 maths and English in college along with level 1 hairdressing and level 2 horse care. I don’t think these grades will be enough to get into university to do the course I really want to do to be a midwife does anyone know what I can do?

You can do an access to midwifery course

Cincinnatus · 30/10/2023 18:37

Hi there,

You will need a Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English (and maybe Science) certificate and then an Access to Midwifery course. Then you can apply to Universities.

You can do all of the above online or in person at a college.

yarnwitch · 30/10/2023 18:40

Contact the university you are interested in and see what you need to do.
You can do access courses, or you may need to re-sit some subjects.
I'm sorry you were bullied, well done for looking to achieve what you want to do

Hi there, I am a midwife. I did Access course with Distance Learning Centre. Do bear in mind the competition for midwifery places is stiff. Definitely go to the Open Day at your local uni and try to pick up exactly what they want. You probably need to do some volunteering to gain relevant experience to talk about at the interview. Better still, get a job as a health care assistant at your local hospital. It's a tough road and a tough job. But very rewarding. Good luck

@Tiredbehyondbelief thank you, I’ve being looking at a course with learn direct?

A lot of universities won’t accept functional skills for midwifery courses so do double check that. You might have to do maths, English and science gcse as well as Access.

Find a college that’s accepts the advanced learner loan, if you qualify as a midwife after uni then you do not need to pay this back

As above you’ll need you Maths and English (some unis want GCSEs some will except the functional skills course), then an access to health care course.

Midwifery courses are competitive but don’t let that put you off. I have a few midwife friends and they’ve all been in similar positions to you. In addition it took them a few rounds to get on the actual uni course, but they’re all band 6s now. None of them are particularly academic but it doesn’t mean they aren’t great midwives.

Whilst you’re gaining your qualifications I’d advise getting a job as a HCA, after some experience you could then get a job in maternity as a HCA. A lot of people do this by starting in care homes, moving to NHS, then getting on the bank and doing shifts on the Mat wards.

It’s a slow journey but worth it. Best of luck!

I did the course with Distant Learning Centre

If you get a job as a HCSW you can often be supported to do access courses etc. and then supported to do a nursing/midwifery degree. A HCSW would also look great on application and give you a good idea of whether you’d enjoy being a midwife.
