Broken Foot

I fell over and broke my foot nearly 8 weeks ago. I was originally told I'd broken 3 metatarsals but I'd actually broken my navicular, cuboid and heel bone. I been using a walking boot and I'm now starting to wean myself off it and into trainers but I'm struggling. It's still painful to walk on and because of the location of the break every pair of trainers I have just sits on it! I'm still taking paracetamol fairly regularly and using ice as my foot swells up.

Does anyone have any idea how long I can expect this to go on for? I'm starting physio this week and my next appointment at the fracture clinic is in 3 weeks time but I honestly thought it would be better by now as most things I've read give a 6 week recovery time.

It took at least 12 weeks for me to get back to normal. That was a year ago and I still can't wear heels. Don't go without the boot until consultant tells you.

Several years ago I broke a toe and metarsal. My foot felt fine walking barefoot/in socks after 8 weeks, but all my shoes felt like they were pinching/rubbing. It was 12 weeks before I could wear my footwear normally again.

So in the meantime I bought a pair of sized-up cheap boots with furry lining from Amazon - I'm a size 5 and I bought a 6. I found I could walk comfortably in those.

Thanks for your replies and sorry you've both suffered! The consultant at the fracture clinic told me to start weaning myself off the boot at 6-7 weeks, which was last Friday so I'm going for short walks in my trainers each day but having to ice my foot when I come back.

It sounds good advice to wean yourself off the boot, but you'll need to find footwear you can tolerate. I found it much easier in warmer weather because I had sandals which felt fine as they didn't press on the wrong bits - but obviously that's no use in this weather. Enclosed footwear was much more of a challenge.

The consultant said the footwear needs to be firm soled and was happy with the trainers as I was wearing one on the other foot. It hadn't occurred to me that it might rub! I might dig out my uggs and see what they are like - not trendy but needs must!

I'm desperate to go into the office for a change of scenery but they won't let me back until I'm definitely out of the boot so I'm not a health and safety risk if there's a fire...
