Would a tablet have a hotspot option?

I never owned a tablet before but I am considering buying one in a black Friday sale if I can find anything.

I have visitors coming from abroad for Christmas and need an internet option for them.

Would a tablet have a hotspot option for thethering your mobile internet?

Mine does, acer, it’s 2-3 years old if not more. I used to use the hotspot on my mobile before we had broadband. So it is possible.

It’s best to check though. I made sure of this before buying the model I did as it was the one thing I needed from a tablet as we didn’t have home internet at the time but took out a 25gig phone contract instead.

might be a good idea to go into currys or similar, somewhere you can handle them and ask for advice. Even if you don’t plan on buying from there, you can get the model number and purchase online/somewhere else.

Yes my ds tablet can tether to a mobile phone. His tablet is Samsung

My Samsung tablet has a Sim card and a data/calls contract. I can switch mobile hotspot on in the tablet settings and tether my laptop to it. Or my daughter's phone if she runs low on data. It's really handy. Just a big phone really.

If you're thinking of getting a WiFi only tablet, then yes, you can tether to other people's hotspot if they give you the password, just like any WiFi network.

They can all connect to Wi-Fi and you can use your mobile phone hotspot as the Wi-Fi source.

Do you mean to tether to a phone or with its own sim card? (Some ipads do but not all)

Bluewaterloo · 30/10/2023 19:16

I think I will likely need a tablet with its own SIM card.

Yes, they are a bit more exoensive, but so useful and versatile!

An apple iPad will have the hotspot option to tether to a mobile phone or you could connect it directly to your home Wi-Fi to access internet.

when you buy it you also have the option to buy it with a SIM card and data plan for which you will pay monthly. If you have this you will be able to access internet outside of the home (without needing to connect to Wi-Fi and without tethering to o mobile phone). I think this means: it won’t drain your mobile battery, it will have its own separate data allowance so it won’t use up your phone’s data allowance, it will be less of a faff each time you want to go online, it will be faster than tethering.
