Holidays on your own

Inspired by a couple of threads on here recently where people are encouraging those at a loose end over Christmas to book a cruise/holiday/cottage by the sea and escape the forced jollity of the festive season.
What are people’s experiences of this? I ask as I have taken myself away for short breaks in the UK over the past few years - staying in a mixture of AirBnB, Hotels and holiday cottages (not over the Christmas period though) and more often than not, I have felt like a bit of an outcast, especially when going out for dinner as a lone woman dining, albeit with my dogs for company.

I quite often find myself subject to looks of suspicion/pity from other tables or am completely ignored by the waiting staff!

Anyone else had this?

You can either find to yourself looked down upon by couples or
Leered at by singles but if you are say 20 to 40 should be ok

I'm happy to travel alone (and have done regularly) but in general I prefer to share the experience with someone. I wouldn't want to pay a Xmas premium to go away then.
