Break on my own - where to go

CoCoaButter85 · 30/10/2023 13:39

I have few days on my own before Christmas and would like to go on a short UK break (I'm London based). Had a look at Edinburgh and Glasgow. Glasgow hotel prices are much lower so feel would be able to do more for my money there, however, Edinburgh seems so much nicer (been to Edinburgh and loved it). In terms of city break happy just to walk around, do few museums, people watch. Doesn't have to be anything in particular.

I'm happy to do a countryside break instead or seaside and just read a book and have some nice walks and meals. Happy to do up to 4 hr drive one way.

Any recommendations/ suggestions very welcome! (Would rather prefer budget hotel and have bit more spending money)

York? I love a solo break and recently did one there and loved the city. Had a lovely few days and found there was plenty to do all in a walkable range and always felt very safe walking around and so on.

I'm away again later in the year and am off to the Cornish coast for a few days with the intention of reading books and consuming the contents of the local bakeries with a sea view.

I absolutely love Edinburgh and go as often as I can so would definitely go there.
Other options for me would be York or Chester

I have loads of great weekend in Glasgow!

NannyGythaOgg · 30/10/2023 14:00

York, Bath, Chester, Lake District, Whitby (- would be my choice), Blackpool, Liverpool

Glasgow is brilliant, loads to see and do.

cherrypied · 30/10/2023 14:03

York- easy to get to, feels safe, loads to do and see. Loads of bars and restaurants and would feel happy going solo!

Doubletree Hilton is always a good price for some reason.

The Christmas market is lovely too.
I'd go Sunday to weds or something similar.

Edinburgh is lovely for a solo break. I am planning one myself so marking this thread.

Muddle2000 · 30/10/2023 14:07

Edinburgh is more picturesque with castle and is very compact
Hence ideal for a short break More touristy Glasgow good all year round on the culture side if you like that

AgentProvocateur · 30/10/2023 14:12

There’s a train every 15 minutes between Glasgow and Edinburgh and it takes less than an hour, so you could do both.

BigDahliaFan · 30/10/2023 14:15

Liverpool is good fun, great food, lots to see. Very easy train ride. Good hotel choice.

Edinburgh over Glasgow for me, though I would possibly pop over to Glasgow for an afternoon look round.

York is lovely, though I personally think there's only just enough for a weekend.

Love Bath, been for work on my own for a few times and happily filled my downtime.

Easy to pop out to Loch Lomond too.

Thank you all for suggestions! York looks interesting. Never been to that part of the country. But doing Glasgow and Edinburgh sounds like a good option too.

Not many seaside destinations though.

Glasgow is a lovely city. If you're interested in art/culture and nice food, Glasgow has as much to offer as Edinburgh, imo. I think you can come across rougher bits in any town/city (and in seaside towns!).
How about Seamill Hydro in Ayrshire for seaside relaxation? Not sure where you're based.

BIossomtoes · 31/10/2023 14:15

York’s gorgeous. Compact and loads to do.

HamHand · 31/10/2023 14:22

Agree that York is beautiful, I’m lucky to have friends there so am excuse to visit any time. If you’re happy with doing not a lot, the north Norfolk coast would be perfect, huge stretches of beach to walk along and some really nice, if slightly old fashioned hotels.

Britpopbaby · 31/10/2023 14:43

Newcastle.

ThreeRingCircus · 31/10/2023 16:18

Definitely York. It's a beautiful city to just walk around...loads to see and do and it's pretty small for a city so you can easily walk everywhere. It'll be gorgeous before Christmas. Easy train from London.

I also really rate Cardiff for a city break for a few nights.

Newgirls · 31/10/2023 16:21

How about St Andrew’s for the coastal part? You can get the train from edinburgh. Lovely beaches, castle, shops, cafe, old cinema. Enough for a day or two so could combine with Edin or Dundee (the v and a is good)

WeighDownOnMe · 31/10/2023 16:23

Dundee or St Andrews. You could easily have a day in both Edinburgh and Glasgow from either of those.

St Andrews is beautiful.

Jeannie88 · 31/10/2023 16:25

As many have suggested, York, especially at Christmas time. The lake district has too many towns to name but if you go somewhere popular like Keswick, it has a lively centre and great base for walks and visiting other places. Enjoy 😉

Jeannie88 · 31/10/2023 16:26

Coastal Whitby, love it, have been hundreds of times and never get tired of it. Xx
