Can you put a smart bulb into any light fitting

The bulb went in my room a few weeks ago. I meant to replace it but I didn't get time yet. I am thinking of getting a smart bulb. Can you put a smart bulb into any light fitting? It's not for a lamp but for the room itself.

Thanks

Yes, I believe you can. As long as the light fitting is standard - you get smart bulbs that are just standard screw or push bulks and you can stick them anywhere.

Pineapplemonkey · 30/10/2023 12:50

Yes you can, just choose the right one for your light fitting (ie screw, bayonet, wattage etc) I have nearly all smart bulbs in my lights now that are entirely controlled by Alexa routines

Yes, you can, but it will just be an over priced light bulb unless you actually want to control it via wi-fi and an app on a phone, table, computer, Alexa, etc.

I would like a bulb that I can manage with Google and tell Google to turn it on and off

Yes I got some from Amazon that just went into lamps - control them using Alexa using routines so goodnight switches off lounge lamp and on go bedroom lamps

That's a smart bulb. They go in ordinary light holders and get their power from the house electricity but they also have a wi-fi chip inside that means you can control them via something like Google's app.

Yes, if you use google, just make sure that whatever bulb you buy is compatible but I think these days, most are.

IKEA sells a wide variety of smart bulbs these days - so just figure out if it's a bayonet, or screw in and what wattage you need and order one. When you install it, you may need to FIRST download a different app, but once you've done that, you then connect it to your Google/Alexa and away you go.

Try to get one that is dimmable and if you have DC, go for one that does different colours - they LOVE that. Mine are set to warm white but DD loves to change them to different colours sometimes! Great for atmosphere.

You just have to make sure the connector on the smart bulb is the same as the one on the light fitting, as there are a variety of different bulb socket types, bayonet, screw thread etc.

I have exactly the same routine set up! I say good night sleep tight, downstairs lamps go off, bedside ones come on and Alexa says don't let the bed bugs bite. I am sometimes far too easily amused 🫣

ReadyForPumpkins · 30/10/2023 14:34

Yes, as long as it's not a dimmer switch. They aren't good for any LED bulbs and smart bulbs are too expensive to risk shortening their lifespan with an unstable current.

ReadyForPumpkins · 30/10/2023 14:35

I have a morning routine with Alexa which I start by saying 'Alexa start my day'. It turns on a dim light in my bedroom and read today's news.

Duo2tu · 30/10/2023 14:45

I have them on my younger children’s rooms and have set up a routine so that they automatically start to dim at bedtime and then turn off when it’s time to stop reading and go to sleep. For some reason they don’t argue with the lightbulb
