Wacky or whacky?

Actually, I might regret this thread...these things can spiral quickly

Wacky as in crazy, whacky makes me think of the verb to whack

TheDogAndDuck · 30/10/2023 11:28

Wacky for Wordle but normally whacky. But I understand both spellings are accepable.

Saschka · 30/10/2023 11:29

First option.

Mabelface · 30/10/2023 11:29

I'd go for the second.

ThreeRingCircus · 30/10/2023 11:29

I would write whacky although I think both spellings are correct.

EerilyDecorated · 30/10/2023 11:34

Wacky

Blanketsburg · 30/10/2023 11:36

Wacky

mindutopia · 30/10/2023 11:36

Wacky. To whack is to hit something.

Appleblum · 30/10/2023 11:36

Wacky

PTSDBarbiegirl · 30/10/2023 11:37

If hitting someone with a wet fish I'd say fish is 'whacky'.

If referencing zany, I'm crazy me, type antics I'd say 'wacky'

Itwasamemo3 · 30/10/2023 11:37

Wacky

dementedpixie · 30/10/2023 11:37

Wacky (as in wild and wacky)

Whacky makes me think of whacking something (or somebody)!

Funkyslippers · 30/10/2023 11:38

Definitely wacky

Breadahead · 30/10/2023 11:39

Crazy? That's wacky.

Have never seen whack used as an adjective, whacky's not a word. Whack is to hit

BeeCucumber · 30/10/2023 11:42

Wacky as in “Wacky Races”.

whatausername · 30/10/2023 15:35

Breadahead · 30/10/2023 11:39

Crazy? That's wacky.

It is indeed a word. Just one you yourself do not use or that, more generally, is not seen as much these days

If it's a word, then it's obsolete.

You know wacky is the preferred spelling, use wacky

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/10/2023 16:32

Whacky

fungibletoken · 30/10/2023 16:38

For me:

Wacky = zany, eccentric
Whacky = if anything, an adjective based on verb "whack" - i.e. to hit something

TheOutlaws · 30/10/2023 16:53

This has been boiling my pedantic piss for at least two decades, since someone wrote ‘whacky’ in my leavers’ book.

Wacky is the correct spelling. Whacky is a misspelling.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2023 17:00

Wacky, never whacky.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2023 17:02

I am Irish and pronounce the H in words like what, where, when, whack.

Whacky would be all wrong.

I suspect it's a misspelling based on the mistaken idea that the word is related to whack.

BirthdayFlower · 30/10/2023 17:02

Wacky baccy

Giggorata · 30/10/2023 17:08

Wacky. I don't think that whacky is a word, either.

I don't know when the word was first used but I think that that whacky was how it was sometimes spelled initially, due to “whack” being an already existing word, but it isn't related and it's awkward.
