Teenagers clothes still stinking like sweat when ironed 🤢

40 degree wash

And they come out smelling nice. Until I run an iron over the pits and then they stink of sweat.

Same with school shirts

Do I have to wash all their clothes at 60?!

Had this big time when one of my sons was a teenager, the others weren't so bad but he was one sweaty kid. White vinegar is the best, the cheapest and always works. Just put some on the affected area and let it soak in and then wash as normal. Don't worry you won't be exchanging the sweaty smell for a vinegar smell.

A scoop of Vanish with the washing powder

PawsisShady · 29/10/2023 22:08

This solves any stinky armpits
Get the dettol stuff and tip a bit neat over the inside of each armpit area on the top
Put them in a 60 degree wash with bio washing powder, the dettol stuff in the fabric conditioner bit and wash

Don't use fabric conditioner as it holds the sweat in, after they're stink free then bio and a bit of the dettol on a 40 degree wash should keep them fine

I've rescued more tops than I can count doing that!

Get your teen to wash with real soap and flannel, not shower gel.

Bio liquid and add Zoflora once a month and pour it over the arm pit area when it is really bad.

Replace the shirts with 100% cotton if possible. I prefer ironing to bad smell.
DD is trained to look for cotton when buying shirts/tops and it does make a huge difference.

pour some white vinegar on the armpits for an hour or so before you wash in the machine.

In the US we have a product called Nature's Miracle (sold for pet odors). Some people have used it on sports uniforms, etc. We have a number of high school (US grades, 9-12, 14-18 years) sports.

I got into the habit of chucking a capful of Linen Fresh zoflora into the soap dispenser of the washing machine, Worked every time. But separate their clothes from yours. It does bleach and wear at fabrics over time.

Bacteria is killed at 60, not 40. Also bio, non-bio is a con.

I've not been able to find napisan for a few months - wasn't sure if it was discontinued.

Does your teen use antiperspirant? If so, it may be depositing on the armpits of the clothes and 'locking in' the odour (as antiperspirant works by gelling/ gumming up the sweat pores in the armpits, it kinda has the same effect on cloth). The only way to get rid of it is to pre-soak the clothing in a low pH solution (acidic, as the antiperspirant active is soluble at pH 2.5). This means vinegar works, as does citric acid, and neither will harm the clothes. Then a low temp wash will work properly.

If there's any visible build up (e.g. yellowing armpits) you may need to repeat several/ many times before you see a difference, but I have rescued several shirts this way.

Lidl do their own version of vanish for under £3 and it’s amazing. I tried everything to get rid of my oldest’s sweaty pit smell to no avail until I tried that stuff - it works miracles. I use a scoop in every wash now ☺️

Look up Laundry Stripping, I swear by this for stubborn smells and stains.

Dettol do an antibacterial laundry cleanser.

Works well.

That's what we had to use when one teen had very strong stinky clothes after I'd washed everything. We also washed at 40, and sprayed the armpits with stain remover pink spray bottle. I found a few less items of clothing in the machine at each wash helped and drying on the line. Dh has a nose like a blood hound and would rewash things as he pulled them out of the washing machine as he could smell them still.
