I've got 2 kids who both have deep chesty coughs at the moment , both generally well in them selfs eating drinking ect in the day apart from constantly coughing all day but at bed time they cough, cough cough and then there sick- is this normal after they've been sick there still coughing.
I've been up stairs a few times to them both being sick from coughing
I don't know what else I can do to help
There both elevated up a bit . Both have vapour plugs in.

Dd was often sick with a cough. She was also a refluxy baby,

Circumferences · 29/10/2023 21:26

Well, it's normal yes, but only for a very bad cough.
I wouldn't be sending them to school etc, but it's not an emergency situation.

Mine do. Both very refluxy babies, so I don't know if that's linked to it. I think when they're young they do tend to swallow down mucus more as they don't know how to manage it (as an adult you'd know to cough into a tissue if possible).

I was myself last week and oh, we both had violent coughs causing vomiting 🤮🤢

My daughter when she was just a baby would often throw up from coughing if she had a cold, particularly at night. Has got less frequent as she’s got older/bigger.

WeWereInParis · 29/10/2023 21:53

I'm assuming these are quite young children? In which case I'd say yes it can be normal from a cough, and less common as they get older. I'd probably still keep them off school/nursery tomorrow if that's applicable, and make sure they're having lots of water.

Mumaway · 29/10/2023 21:56

Very common. Keep their temps down, sips of fluids, plain food like toast or rice

musicalfrog · 29/10/2023 21:58

I'd say it depends on the individual. Some people have a really sensitive gag reflex bless them.

Cherrysoup · 29/10/2023 22:03

Interestingly, I read an article about ‘long cold’ yesterday, where having a cold meant people had d&v too. This was me last week, constant diarrhoea 😢and feeling sick.

fourelementary · 29/10/2023 22:06

Yes it can help little ones bring up the phlegm they can’t cough up. So being sick is quite normal with bad coughs. Older people can cough so much their gag reflex is triggered. Different from kids though as they’re able to bring up phlegm mostly!!

@WeWereInParis not really 7 and 9 but it's been happening for years and I've never thought is it normal or not

2 of mine just had same. Lasted a few days. Otherwise well.
Must be some bug going round. Nothing really helped the cough it just settled after 2 or 3 days

PlumpAndGrump · 29/10/2023 22:08

Should add mine are 6 and 10 and it came on suddenly out of no where with the coughing

elliejjtiny · 29/10/2023 22:09

Yes, my 2 who were reflux babies do that, aged 10 and 12.

DelurkingAJ · 29/10/2023 22:13

DS1 appears to have grown out of it (finally, touch wood, aged 11). He’s had a stinking cold and is now just about with it enough to blow his nose constantly rather than swallowing the phlegm and then being sick. I’d hoped he’d get there several years ago but apparently not.
