To support the work that the Royal British Legion do.

Nobody around here seems to be wearing one.

Yes I will.
Remembrance Day was a big day when I was a child, I loved seeing my grandad march wearing his medals along with all the other ex soldiers. The RBL is a big part of the community here and Remembrance Day is always a big deal.

I have nothing against people that don’t want to wear a poppy or be part of Remembrance Day, each to there own but I will be wearing mine.

WrongSwanson · 29/10/2023 22:04

@Appleofmyeye2023

The poppy IS the symbol of the futility of war, MENs stupid aggression on a global scale, and the countless lives lost and still being lost.

I used to believe that's what it symbolised. And wore it for those reasons.

But it's clear that many in current generations are quite ignorant about WW1 and have turned it into some jingoistic statement of blind support for war. And indeed, astonishingly, believe WW1 was a fight for "our freedom" (the mind boggles)

honkersbonkers38 · 29/10/2023 22:04

Yes.

Maatandosiris · 29/10/2023 22:03

Yes and some of the comments on here suggest there needs to be a big education campaign about them.

but LMFAO over the im joy wearing one cos virtue signalling innit without a hint they grasp the irony

How patronising. People don’t need to be educated into wearing a poppy if they don’t want to.

Missingmyusername · 29/10/2023 22:04

Yes. A simple answer.

FloweryName · 29/10/2023 22:05

I will still donate because I know that veterans need the support, but I can’t say that I ‘wear a poopy with pride’ like I used to.

Lest we forget has become a meaningless sentiment considering the despicable acts of war this country is currently giving its full support to.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/10/2023 22:05

"Remembrance" and Halloween have both become seasons. They are both just one day. I'll wear a poppy nearer the time.

Appleofmyeye2023 · 29/10/2023 22:05

WrongSwanson · 29/10/2023 22:01

WW1 wasn't about our freedom though. Our freedom was never at risk. It was about empire building and dick swinging by the political elite.
And the aftermath of WW1 created the dire circumstances in Germany that Hitler and the Nazis exploited to rise to power.

It's dangerous to oversimplify things, as it prevents us learning the lessons from history.

What part are you misrepresenting that nobody took to wearing the poppies because they ever, ever felt WW1 was a “ just” war.
by the time the body bags containing their sons, that died fighting for some dick generals over a yard of mud gained, most people realised it was jingoism
read Vera Briton, the war poets, listen to the bloody songs everyone was singing
we don’t wear the poppy for the bloody politicians or generals, but for the literal bloody bits of bodies that were wasted and never bought home.

DwarfPlanetFiend · 29/10/2023 22:06

Agreed. Rishi and the government wearing a poppy is a joke.

80sMum · 29/10/2023 22:06

No, I won't.

Worriedmum159 · 29/10/2023 22:06

ehb102 · 29/10/2023 21:57

Yes, really. Every year we say "We will remember them" and "Lest we forget". And in the place where I live no one had got it together to put a box of poppies and a collection tin on a counter. I was horrified and shocked. Just like I am horrified and shocked at people who have forgotten and don't think it is important to remember.

World War One was stupid ruling classes sending those they viewed as lesser to the slaughter. We need to remember this and keep in mind what happens when you view other humans as worth less. That is the most pressing need to remember that I know right now.

Why don’t you get it together?

category12 · 29/10/2023 22:07

No.

SerafinasGoose · 29/10/2023 22:07

MolkosTeenageAngst · 29/10/2023 21:58

No. I won’t wear one and definitely won’t donate. I usually donate to an international humanitarian charity/ organisation helping innocent victims of conflict or to charities helping refugees around Remembrance Day but definitely wouldn’t give anything to the British legion.

Agree.

PTSD/cPTSD, addiction recovery and homelessness are matters very close to my heart. I've had close involvement with support groups surrounding two of these, and donate to charity in accordance with that choice. All three issues adversely affect veterans and a great deal might be achieved through these less visible and far less glamorous forms of support. Year round.

Not wearing a poppy or donating to the Royal British Legion once a year in November is not to show a lack of respect. Frankly, I'm not sure where people get off in claiming that it is, or administering lofty rebukes to people who don't happen to capitulate to their personal beliefs.

That is a matter for them.

And yes, Poppy Watch is certainly worthy of a watch.

I agree. That's why I wore the poppy.
But people now are misunderstanding and thinking they fought for our freedom when they didn't. WW1 was a senseless unnecessary war.

dublino · 29/10/2023 22:08

As an Irish person I do not get the negativity towards those who choose not to wear it. I have a gg uncle that died in WW1 and I wouldn't wear one because of the actions of some soldiers in NI. The sectarian abuse James McClean has to take for his refusal to wear one is horrific seeing that he us from Derry and what the British army did there . People should have the choice to wear what they like and likewise free to choose not to

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 29/10/2023 22:08

Yes. I will. But only from the first week of nov.

ColleenDonaghy · 29/10/2023 22:08

I can never understand the juxtaposition between the poppy as a symbol of the utter waste and futility of war - while also supporting post WW2 military, all of whom have joined willingly and frequently found themselves in places they shouldn't have been, doing things they shouldn't be doing.

mrsmacmc · 29/10/2023 22:09

Yes from 01 November

Rosiem2808 · 29/10/2023 22:10

@thingsthatmakeyougohmmmmmmmm

Interesting to hear your views, my parents were teenagers in ww2. Dad helped in the rubble of his town as a teenager, mum was on sand bucket duty to cover the incendiary bombs that dropped.
I want to support the legion in all they do for people who serve.

Agree with this. My dad lost a leg in WW2. He was 19. Joined up because he felt compelled to do so. He lost his leg fighting for the right to be able to live in freedom and he lost his leg so people now can say what they like without fear. It ruined his life. He was a sportsman and it put a stop to that. I wear my poppy for my Dad and am proud to do so.

Quite

Rosiem2808 · 29/10/2023 22:12

We wear a poppy because we should never ever forget any of it. The waste of life and the anguish should never be forgotten. A lesson never to do it again

BitofaStramash · 29/10/2023 22:12

Of course.

Always.

Quite. 'Lest we forget' while supporting babies being bombed.

Goshdarnitgoofy · 29/10/2023 22:15

Yes - we should remember those that have their lives so we could have our freedom
