Reading and homework in Yr 1

Parents of Year 1’s - how much reading do your kids do in school please?

Going through DD’s reading diary and there are only two entries made by the teacher and these are just stuck in generic entries which I’m finding concerning along with a massive amount of ‘homework’ to be completed over half term including flash cards and phonics sounds to be learned.

Additionally, homework is issued weekly but is extremely vague, is not marked when completed but DD has previously been told that she will have to remain behind at lunch to do it if it hasn’t been finished. This ranges from precursive practice to number bonds.

My question really would be - does this sound like the right amount of reading during the school day? Are children in other schools expected to write in precursive? Thank you for your input, I have a parents evening coming up and I feel that I have a lot to discuss with the teacher so far!

My child in y1 doesn't have homework as such. A reading book is sent home weekly that we are asked to read at least 3 times in the week, and they read usually once per week in school. No other homework.
I have heard that they will be starting to get homework now after October half term though, so this may change.

My Y1 has weekly guided reading sessions - I think; they're not recorded in the reading diary as that's just for home reading. To be honest I think most of the reading practice is meant to be at home.

Homework is very little here at the moment. (Our school doesn't teach precursive.)

We are asked to read "as often as possible" but generally only manage 3 times a week. He reads to someone in school 1/2 times a week.

We get a weekly maths sheet. This week was number bonds to 20, and had 8 questions (took 5 minutes max)

We also get a list of 10 spellings to learn each week, we someone 15-20 minutes the night before the test.

No one has mentioned moving to precursive yet

At this point in year 1 the only homework we got was reading. In terms of cursive, they teach cursive from the beginning (Reception). DD probably read with a TA every week and with the teacher once a month or so. She was quite a competent reader and we read lots at home so they may have read more with others.

Thank you all. Precursive wasn’t a thing in reception in DD’s school and then introduced in Yr1 which is causing a bit of faff with her and peers trying to change the basic letters they’d learnt in reception.

We get 2 books sent home and expected to read 'as much as possible'. Also get a maths sheet and a English sheet each weekend takes around 20 mins.
My son is a good reader so think in the last half term he has only read with a teacher twice but reads with another kid in the class daily. My Daughter who is dyslexic and struggled massively at this age read weekly if not more with a teacher.
We get about 10 spellings per half term.

My year 1 child has reading and 10 new words to learn spellings weekly. Book is to be read 3 times per week but for the sake of routine we do it every evening and afterwards practice spellings. it only takes around 10 minutes to listen to her read the book, and then another 20 minutes for the spellings but we go through that together for a few minutes and then she will happily go off and practice writing them down and I just check at the end.
