How much does scaffolding cost?

My mum and dad are in their 80s. They live in a pretty standard 4 bed post war semi in the south east. Dad has just told me they are getting some work done on their roof and it's costing £8k, £4k of which is scaffolding. No VAT (more on that later).

They have not had any other quotes. They found the guy on trustatrader and were impressed by his reviews, but my experience of trustatrader has been that they are overpriced chancers whose reviews don't bear any resemblance to the quality of their work. One lot painted our house in the rain and were surprised when it washed off. Lovely guys, not too bright. But maybe I've just been unlucky.

The guy doesn't charge VAT. He said his accountant is pressuring him to do it soon but if my parents book quickly then they'll get it without VAT. This sounds very suspicious, particularly given the VAT threshold is very low, and if this guy has been trading for a number of years as he claims, he should be easily exceeding the VAT threshold.

Dad is personally affronted at my suggestion he should get another quote, I think because it questions his judgment of character. Basically, my dad is a conman's dream.

He says I don't understand how much this stuff costs as I live in the north, which may be a fair point.

I can't ask how much the roofing work should cost as I don't know the full extent of what is being done, but I know it's not a reroof, more a tidy up, moss washed off, some new tiles and chimney pointing. However, given the description of the house and location, does the scaffolding price sound fair?

It's their money and they can spend it how they want but I'm worried they're going to get a rubbish job or someone who discovers "more problems" when up there and demands more money.

Do you know how long will it be up?

We've got scaffolding round three sides of our house (4 bedroom detached farmhouse in Cornwall) and it's costing £3k for three months.

Thank you, this is helpful info. It's going to be up for a few days. So it sounds like they are overpaying, even for the south east.

That sounds suspiciously cheap for scaffolding if they are anywhere near london.
And given the rest of the context they should steer clear, at least get another quote. And defo don't hand over a penny in advance

We are in London and had scaffolding up to roof level for roof repairs and then exterior painting - £500 for it last August. It was up for 6 weeks as they left it u til they had another job in the area. We had one quote which was £5k just for scaffolding so went and talked to a couple of companies who had scaffolding up in the area and one of them sorted it.

They’re being ripped off.

Stringervest · 29/10/2023 17:54

@allgrownupnow you think it's cheap for scaffolding?! I thought it was expensive and most other posters seem to agree. They are Home Counties, commutable to London by direct train in just over an hour.

Scaffolding can easily cost £1k for a short job, in Surrey.

Stringervest · 29/10/2023 18:18

Hmm, well if my parents are packing £4K for a short job then it sounds like they are being ripped off badly.

Scaffolding is expensive- you are paying mainly for the work to put it up and take it down rather than the length of time it's up. In my experience, round here (South West) they never take it away when they say they will and it's up for weeks, if not months. Take the opportunity to get any other jobs done like render, painting, windows, gutters, etc.
