Hi all
We are a family of 4: 2 adults 2 kids 9 and 7. We spend approx 650-£680 per month on food and toiletries/cleaning products. I have been tracking the spend on an app.
how does it compare?
I tend to go and buy bits daily and I know it’s risky as you get tempted to buy more.

It won't matter to you how much I spend because I could be richer or poorer than you

Me and 1 adult DC spend about £100 a week. That's probably quite high, but I'm dairy free so that pushes the cost up (oat milk, etc) and DS eats a lot of meat as he does weight training. It does include all meals though as wfh. I could probably reduce this but can afford so doesn't really need to. Like you, I do have a tendency to do top up shops.

£650 doesn't sound unreasonable for a family of 4 (well, it does, but that's just because food prices are extortionate!)

About 600 a month now. I could do it for 300 if really needed.

So much right now... easily £200 a week. I used to be able to do it for less than half that.

But you're likely to waste less food and will also have more opportunities to pick up offers and yellow stickers, so could spend less overall.

But agree with a PP that it is pointless comparing yourself to others as everyone has different budgets, priorities, dietary requirements and available shops that means that some will spend less and some will spend more than you.

Big shop during pandemic £80-100 a week. Twice that now, easily.

Yes, similar. I used to do thee at about £75 and then one bigger one of about 100.

I'm currently failing to keep it under £800 a month. (There are five of us and we are quite capable of getting through a Kg of crunchy peanut butter and 240g of Marmite in a week.)

Itwasfinetillitwasnt · 29/10/2023 11:47

You could do it for alot less (I do) but it's all relative to what you have. I am a single parent (of 3 teenagers) living on disability benefits so have no choice.
I spend no more than £70 every 10 days (includes toiletries, cleaning products etc). I do an online shop, meal plan every meal and use lots of basic ranges. I cook lots from scratch, batch cook, bulk buy when I can, have one gluten free and two afrid dc which can be difficult to cater for at times. I cook alot of chilli, spaghetti bolognaise, curry, lots of potatoes and frozen vegetables. I also have 'cheap nights' having beans/tomatoes/egg on toast, jacket potato and cheese (which I buy in bulk and freeze), leftovers.

Between £800 and £1000 a month. It's obscene. I do have 2 late teen sons, so I'm feeding 3 men and myself. And they are all gym goers so obsessed with protein.

Paddleboarder · 29/10/2023 11:55

I spend about £80 per week for me and one teenager. I'm vegetarian so don't buy much meat/fish, just a little if my child requests it.

captivate · 29/10/2023 11:57

It probably averages around £150 a week for 4 of us and a cat. I tend to do toiletries and cleaning stuff in bulk once every 2 months in Home Bargains or B&M and then I switch up where I shop each week based on what offers are on where for the pricier things.

If I really had to, I probably could get it down a bit by doing more batch cooking and cooking from scratch, but it's a time and effort vs saving money trade off at the minute. And my time and sanity are more valuable. I'm just fortunate we can afford it.

ThousandCows · 29/10/2023 13:21

Probably about £100/week, doing most of the shopping in Aldi. My boys are currently 5 and 7 though, and get free school meals through primary. I expect it'll be eye-watering by the time they're teenagers!

Girasoli · 29/10/2023 13:26

About £80-£100 on the 'big shop' at the weekend and then maybe another £20-30 mid week for bread/milk/fruit/packed lunch bits.

InDubiousBattle · 29/10/2023 14:34

Same family size and similar aged dc here and we spend about the same as you, with cleaning stuff and some booze included in that.
