I currently work as a trade union rep but have become very disappointed with my role. I could work for another trade union but looking for a chance.
We have very little staff and our membership is mostly migrant worker’s many of who speak little English. This means I have a mixture of very boring repetitive cases(eg. small wages claims) and more complex cases( discrimination/ unfair dismissal)

I would like to work more towards discrimination / dismissal cases and am on the lookout for a role at places such as CAB.
I have also gone back and forth with the idea of joining CIPD and doing a course in hr( level 3/5) but it’s quite expensive.
I’m a single parent and wages are quite low for what we do.

My skills/qualifications include:

  • good knowledge of Employment law including dealing with disciplinares, grievances, disability and racial discrimination, liaise with HR, ACAs, advising on COT3 settlements, preparing ET1 for tribunal etc, Subject Acess Request
  • Language skills (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese)
  • Degree in Law but decided I dint want to be a Solicitor or barrister as I don’t think I would be able to cope.
I’m looking to move from the charity sector to the private sector potentially starting at CAB for a short while then move to a private organisation.

If anyone has similar background to me or any ideas, I would love to hear from you.
Thank you in advance

Apply for HR roles where the employer supports CIPD through the apprenticeship route? Lots of bigger employers do

I was going to say the same. There are plenty of HR jobs about. Get on linked in and upload you qualifications and experience -

Thank you both.
do you think my role as a trade union rep will but employers off?
I worry about it sometimes, although many of my colleagues have successfully found jobs. I think I’m just nervous/ scarred of the change.

There needs to be trade union reps - think about the skills you need for that role rather than the role it’s self

off the top of my head - empathy, people management, conflict resolution, detailed reporting, face to face customer services - let alone the finer details of contracts etc

A lot of jobs are now skill based rather th qualifications
