Who knows anything about oak tables ?

I inherited a solid oak dining table years ago, it is so sticky !! Your hand sticks to it, paper etc...
it needs a good clean because none of the usual stuff works ! Ideally I want to sand it back and then use osmo wax on it.
Do I need to clean it with vinegar before I start sanding or shall I just go straight to sanding ?
Any tips would be great !

Another question - when you spill any liquid on it it goes white, why is that ??

There is a trick to get rid of white water marks. Put a cotton tea towel on to the table and iron on top of it. It brings the water out of the wood. We bought a lovely little coffee table for my son but it had a water mark in it so we got it was very cheap. The water mark has now gone, the table is sanded and waxed and looks great.

If you're going to sand the original finish off anyway, there's no need for the iron trick. White marks are moisture trapped between the layers of the finish.

Try meths on a soft cloth to remove the stickiness.

We've just gone for it with a handheld electric sander. That's certainly got the stickiness off ! Still white marks showing at the moment though but hoping they will go with more sanding

I have the same table (bought new). We had a glass top made for it plus a separate glass bit for the extension (because we rarely extend it). Not only does it protect the oak but also stops crumbs getting into the grooves.

Was it oak furniture land ? I think that's where this one was from !
Omg the grooves were disgusting 😆 black hardened gunk !!

Yes it was. Any table with grooves is a bad idea, hence the glass. It's a beautiful table once the glass is protecting it.
