Scissor happy hairdresser

Minor problem in the grand scheme of things I know, but just want a moan/rant.

I pay a small fortune to have my hair cut and coloured at a high end salon. I'm getting older and going slightly grey and my hair is one of the things I like about myself I try to keep it nice.

My usual hairdresser has done a lovely colour but I had a different stylist cut it. She hasn't listened to me at all and went in and has completely hacked away at my hair, taken loads more off than I wanted/needed. My hair was in great condition and instead of a trim she's done a complete restyle.

So pissed off. They did offer to try and fix it but short of sticking all my hair back on I'm not sure what could be done. I'll just have to wait until it all grows back.

Kicking myself now for not being clearer but she didn't give me chance she went in so fast, usually every hairdresser will talk you through what they're doing checking with you as they go.

Anyone else ever has this happen?

Yes, it happened to me once, I lost about 4 or 5 inches more than I wanted. The hairdresser simply didn't listen, they were upset about something that had happened to them in their own life.

I was annoyed for a few days but not devastated. It grew back.

If they've offered to put it right I'd ask them what they think they can do. In absolute length terms, how much shorter is it than you wanted?

ChocolatePeanutButterPie · 29/10/2023 07:20

Yes which is why I learnt to colour and cut my own hair.
Hairdressers and dentists, never change a good one.
Coconut oil makes my hair grows faster.

Tintackedsea · 29/10/2023 07:21

Commiserations. It's so shit when this happens. I have very thick curly hair and it has been butchered by hairdressers more times than I can count. I think they just get a bit carried away sometimes and keep cutting as they chat. Awful, awful, awful. I feel it really alters your mood and confidence when your hair isn't as you want it. I hope it grows out quickly for you, OP.

I will get over it and I know it will start to grow out in a few weeks, just really annoying.

It's not so much what she's taken off the length I can live with that. My hair was long and all one length all I wanted was a trim and she's done a blooming 90s Rachel cut on me. It's a totally different style and not what I wanted.

I have the opposite problem, I have a short pixie style and hairdressers always seem to want me to grow my hair and act disappointed when I say I want to keep it short. I’ve had so many appointments where I’ve had to repeatedly ask for more hair to be taken off as they just don’t like cutting it. Luckily I’ve found someone who’s happy to do what I want, but she’s on maternity leave so I have a year of frustrating appointments ahead of me 😫

MidnightOnceMore · 29/10/2023 07:26

How many inches shorter is it, and what have the salon said they could do to remedy it?

That's the thing isn't it, when they think they know better than you. But it's you that's got to live with the hairstyle not them.

I'd be absolutely furious, I'm the same as you about my hair, think we all are really.
As I've gotten older, late 50's I felt that my hairdresser didn't care or maybe thought that I didn't care what my hair looked like anymore.
I do, it's about personal pride, how I present myself to the world.
I have a shoulder length bob with a balayage, once she took a chunk out of my bob so I had a gap and another time she put a toner on and it looked green, I questioned her and she tried to blame the lights.
It definitely had a khaki hue.
She never finished me off, no smoothing products or hairspray, I'd look worse when I left than when I went in.
I have really nice hair, thick and in really good condition.
I now go to a little backstreet hairdresser who does a lovely job and I've even been featured on her business page.
You have my sympathy, I've actually cried after bad haircuts, just try to make the most of it until it grows

It's not so much the length. We agreed 2 inches and she's taken off 4, but I'm not too worried about that. She chopped loads of short layers into it and short all round my face which I didn't ask for. It a totally different style.

They offered to try and fix it but didn't say how, they can't fix it because it was long and all one length and I wanted a trim.

I'm trying to find another hairdresser as i lol having long hair . Every time I go I as for a trim and every time she bobs it saying I really suit it! I don't want a Bob as isn't tie it up at work properly and I like long hair

booksandbeans · 29/10/2023 07:35

Yes. Turned up to be told my hairdresser (who had given me the best cut ever) had moved but she could do it. I just wanted a trim of what I had but she gave me what she had basically with feathering down the sides & a lop sided bob type style. It looked horrific. Now have a lovely stylist & a decent backup.

I have learnt that you need to like the hairstyle of your hairdresser as this is roughly what you are going to get. If you have a pixie cut (I did once) find a stylist with a similar style.

Meredusoleil · 29/10/2023 07:42

OP, if you want it all one length, can they not cut it up to the shortest layers and then you grow it all out again? Or would that be far too short?

justalittlesnoel · 29/10/2023 07:42

This happened to me before!

Had my usual colour with my hairdresser, she asked if the trainee could do the cut - I said, of course as long as she wouldn't cut it all of (joking obviously).

My one length blunt cut, became a wispy layered mess. My hair looks terrible with layers! She had all of my hair behind my head on my back (which normally happens when I have my blunt cut) then I thought she was tidying up the ends when she was lifting the hair up (my hairdresser also does this). It was only when she came to the bits around my face and chopped one really short I asked what she was doing - she said "oh just some layers to add some movement" and I was so shocked. Asked her to stop and for my regular hairdresser to come over, who was also very shocked and couldn't have been more apologetic. I let her finish it (because I had layers on half of my head at that point) and I hated it 😂

My next cut and colour was free though which saved me £££. Probably took about 9 months for all of the layers to blend in a bit better, now I'm back to one uniform length. I'd ask them for a free service next time!

IsThatMyUmbrella · 29/10/2023 07:48

I'm 60, and I've only ever had one hairdresser who did a great job - listened, took time (I have very thick hair) and understood what I wanted. She moved away - too far for me to travel - and since then I don't think I've returned to the same hairdresser twice. They never do what I ask.

I've been cutting and colouring my hair for years now which costs me next to nothing. I've been so disappointed when I've paid a small fortune to have it done professionally and it's crap, then it's months waiting for it to grow again. Thank goodness for YouTube tutorial videos!

Beautiful3 · 29/10/2023 07:49

Yes that happened to me. I had long blonde hair, all one length. I just wanted a trim. But instead I got layers?!! It took years to grow them all out! I was so annoyed. Years later i used a family friend, who came to the house. She cut my newly grown hair into a long bob?! There was no mirror so i didnt see what was happening! I cried after that. Eventualy I found another hairdresser who actually listened to me. She was great, and i used her for years. Unfortunately she's retired now, so I trim my own hair because i don't trust anyone else.

Unfortunately this would take it to chin length which would be too much for me. It was down my back.

Thanks all for sharing. It's just one of those really annoying things that can sometimes happen.

I've had some bad colour jobs in the past but even when going to small, backstreet salons I don't think I've ever had anyone chop away at my hair like this.
