How much ££ in birthday card for 13yo party?

DD12 has been invited to the 13th birthday party of a kid she used to go to nursery with. They were great buddies, went to different primary schools, had a few playdates over the years and it petered out. Randomly invited to his 13th birthday party which is a disco in a community centre.

I thought she'd be too shy to go - she won't know anyone except him probably - but I'm quite proud she sees it as a nice chance to catch up with an old friend. She knows she can call to get picked up early if she feels awkward.

She wants to give cash in a card rather than a gift, given she is not sure what he'd like. Fine by me, saves the hassle of shopping but no idea what's the right amount.

I suggested £10 and husband told me I was mad and old and out of touch and it should be £30. I think this is mad and embarrassingly too much. He said £20 is the bare minimum. I agree if it was a nephew or something but a random kid at a huge birthday party?

What does the hive mind think is the going rate? We're in zone 3 London if that makes any difference and the kids are in Y8.

£10 and a bag of sweets.

RoseBucket · 27/10/2023 14:20

£10

£10 def. I'd be embarrassed as the parent of birthday child if £20-30 was given.

£10 and sweets usually. Or £15 but that's from close mates. Y8.

BoohooWoohoo · 27/10/2023 14:21

£10 is fine.
£20 for a best friend but I've never considered £30.

Catsfrontbum · 27/10/2023 14:25

£10 and bag of haribo or bar of Tony’s
£15 and no bag
£20- bit much but ok
£30- no way, trying too hard!

xyz111 · 27/10/2023 14:28

£10 is absolutely fine!

Catnuzzle · 27/10/2023 14:32

£13.

Nokoolaidherethanks · 27/10/2023 14:33

£10, we just gave that plus a book to DS13's best friend for 14th birthday.

BlowDryRat · 27/10/2023 14:41

£10. I have a 13yo and he was very pleased with money gifts!

Fawbs89 · 27/10/2023 14:43

£10 He's only 13!

Icopewhenihope · 27/10/2023 14:43

€20 is the norm here.

Notmetoo · 27/10/2023 14:44

£10 is plenty. £30 definitely too much!

StarlightLime · 27/10/2023 14:45

£20.

Thursa · 27/10/2023 15:18

Tape 13 pound coins into the card,

Bullshot · 27/10/2023 15:20

£10 is enough

I only give £20 to family kids

TomatoSandwiches · 27/10/2023 15:22

£20

NotFastButFurious · 27/10/2023 15:25

£30 is my budget for nieces / nephews and godchildren so I wouldn't go more than £15.

Fridaysgirl17 · 27/10/2023 15:27

€20 for me, I give €10 now for my son's classmates & they are 6/7, I'm in Ireland hence €, but €20 would be what I'd go for

UsingChangeofName · 27/10/2023 15:39

I was going to say a fiver is fine, so yes, of course 10 is plenty.

Tape 13 pound coins into the card
This is another option.

DinosApple · 27/10/2023 15:41

£10 for friends.
Plus sweets if you're feeling generous.

RallyRallyAppreciateIt · 27/10/2023 15:43

£10 here too.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 27/10/2023 15:45

Tenner and a Toblerone.

If you give £30 will look weird.

We spend about £20 on nieces/nephews who are young teens.

kak1919 · 27/10/2023 15:46

Wow do I feel tight I send £5

rainbowsparkle28 · 27/10/2023 15:46

£10. Fair enough £20 if particularly close best friend / family member but they are not in this case.
