Normal or worth going to the GP for this?

This is pretty much the first time my DD has been properly poorly, and the internet seems full of conflicting info so I’m just not sure.

DD (2) was a little out of sorts on Sunday. Little things like not wanting to play in the park or get out of the pushchair when we went for a walk. She then woke Sunday night around 2am with a temp which I treated with calpol.

Monday morning she seemed ok but as the day progressed she became worse, didn’t want to do anything other than flop on the sofa or sleep. She’s basically been the same since, she has little bursts of energy where she perks up but she isn’t herself at all.

She’s also not eaten a proper meal since the weekend, and today anything she has eaten she has immediately vomited back up.

Her temperature keeps spiking as well but calpol brings it down.

However she is also snotty and has a cough, which makes me think it’s just a bad cold and I’d be wasting GP time. But the other things are making me worry as she’s not been like this before, even when she first started nursery she had a few mild illnesses but nothing that slowed her down like this.

So is this normal for kids and we’ve just been lucky so far or do I need to get her seen? Tia

Chances are it’s a viral infection that will pass. But if something doesn’t feel quite right, that’s enough to mean you should call someone about it, nobody nos your child quite like you and no doctor would ever begrudge checking a poorly toddler. If she’s not keeping fluids down she needs to be seen 100%. Hopefully itl pass soon.

Is she drinking and peeing? Or are her nappies on the dry side?

That, along with eating bits here and there (when it wasn't a vomitty bug), was my benchmark for when to seek help. Inevitably that's what the GP would ask when I took my kids to be seen.

Just to add, the GP always said they would want to see my kids if I was worried. They would want to check over and offer reassurance rather than have me worrying about them at home.

I hope your LO is on the mend soon

As she’s been ill so long and not much better, with the weekend coming, I’d get her seen today.

Yes I agree with PP, get her checked out by the GP today

Before you go to the appointment so that you can give as much information to the GP as possible.....

check the amount of wee she has made (also the colour of it)

Is her nappy dry or wet? Maybe weigh it compared to a new one - perhaps even take them both with you for the GP to see

check her all over for skin rashes

Check for bumps like her lymph nodes (behind her ears, throat, armpits, top of leg etc) just so you can give as much information as possible to the GP when you visit - hopefully they will give a full check as well

Hopefully, it is just a flu type of thing and she is back to normal in a couple of days - sending supportive MN hugs

Maybe don't give her a dose of Calpol before you go so the GP can see her without the Calpol - take the bottle with you

Thank you for the replies! I am going to phone the doctors as soon as they open, just hope I can get through, it’s a nightmare booking appointments at my surgery 🤞

Up until yesterday she was still drinking milk but she refused to drink anything at all yesterday and her nappy was quite dry before bed and bone dry this morning 😔

No rashes or lumps that I can see though.

Thank you for the advice x

Tell them she hasn’t peed overnight, she needs seeing.

Inmy40 · 27/10/2023 07:56

Ask them to check for tonsillitis as my little one always vomited with that one.

DustyLee123 · 27/10/2023 07:56

If the GP can’t see you it’s off to urgent care/walk in.

FloofCloud · 27/10/2023 07:59

Yes GP, probably nothing g but worth a visit

hashbrownsandwich · 27/10/2023 08:17

As a HCP I would normally think let her ride it out but the lack of passing urine is a red flag so definately needs to be seen.

overwhelmed2023 · 27/10/2023 08:20

Say straightaway she hasn't passed urine. They should see all babies/ toddlers

brassbells · 27/10/2023 08:35

Hope you have got an appointment during the 8am scramble

Yes definitely tell them not drinking as normal and no wee should make reception desk get you seen asap

Bells3032 · 27/10/2023 08:41

My daughter had something similar a couple of weeks ago but she was always drinking. didn't eat really anything for about a week. even her fave snacks but she was drinking. temp kept coming down and then spiking. was driving me mad. but the three warning signs i've always been taught by my GP:

  1. are they having at least half of the number of wet nappies
  2. are they interested in their toys?
  3. Do they have any weird rashes.

If you're concerned about any of the above see a gp (and if the rash doesn't go away when pressed go to a&e)

So the wet nappies (or lack thereof) would concern me so i'd go see the GP if i were you

FLOWER1982 · 27/10/2023 08:45

Temperature for more than 5 days should be seen to. My dd was like this last year. She took a turn after 5 days, long story short went to hospital and got admitted for a bad case of tonsillitis. They did query sepsis when she went in. Always worth checking just to be sure.
did you get through?

DustyLee123 · 27/10/2023 08:52

Let us know OP 🤞🏻

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/10/2023 11:34

I hope you've got an appointment. It's likely " just a virus" but I'd be concerned about the lack of wet nappies
I hope she perks up soon
It's such a worry when they're not themselves

DustyLee123 · 28/10/2023 18:03

@LethalToddlerElbows any news ?

LethalToddlerElbows · 01/11/2023 15:54

Ah sorry I forgot to come back and update!

I managed to get a GP appointment for her on Friday morning first thing (by some miracle!). She had a look in her mouth and said her tonsils were quite inflamed and all her symptoms fit for some sort of viral infection. Advised to switch from calpol to Nuerofen to treat the swelling.

She pretty much perked up that same day to be honest and I'm pleased to report she is fully back to normal now.

Apparently there are some quite nasty viruses going around at the moment so symptoms like fevers and lack of appetite are sticking around longer - I'm glad I did get her checked those just in case!
