If you have these where do you use them and do they save you any money?

I've been sent 2 from my energy company but I'm struggling with where to put them.

If I had one I’d definitely use it in my straighteners and iron so I could check they were off once I’ve already left the house and the seed of doubt creeps in.

You mean the sort that link to Alexa? I used my first one on table lamps whose switches were a bit tricky to reach. Bought a second for the bedside lights in my room so I can turn them on before setting off upstairs each night.

I've got 3 in my lounge with "fairy lights" which are scheduled to come on 30 mins before dusk and go off at 11.30pm. Said lights being 2 sets round the door frames and a lit tree. I have another one for my wicker snowman over Christmas.

Also have one on my outdoor fountain which is plugged in the shed, so I can switch it on remotely. It is set to run for 30 mins when switched on.

Another on the dehumidifier in the conservatory which runs for a couple of hours in the night (Nov-Mar ish).

One on the electric radiator in the conservatory. It is turned off atm and I can't remember what the sch was last winter.

And another on an electric radiator under my desk, I use that when working at home and don't want to heat the whole house. Again set to run for 30 mins when switched on.

Haven't got a smart meter so don't know about savings but I use them for lamps and Christmas tree lights. Any plugs that are annoying to get to are ideal. It's so great just saying 'Alexa goodnight' and everything turning off.
It doesn't really work with things that have switches on like irons, kettles, straighteners - you'd have to leave them 'on' to turn off via alexa.

I use them for convenience rather than to save money. I have them on all my lamps plus on a power adaptor that controls my chargers etc. I have smart bulbs in my ceiling lights too so almost all my lighting can be controlled by Alexa.

Thanks @Blackbinbag
I have a toddler so those are always put up high after I use them anyway but good idea for the future.
My dad once had to turn around 20 miles in to a trip because my sister wasn't sure she'd tuned hers off!

We have a few. Things they are used or...

On TVs and phone charging stations and things that can be auto powered off at the switch overnight. Saves a bit of leccy.

Christmas lights, to set a schedule.

The electric blanket so if I am cold in the night I just tell Alexa to heat the bed and the blanket comes on then auto shuts off after 15mins as a boost of heat. Or I can tell Alexa to turn the blanket on from the lounge before I go to bed.

The wax melter for those scented waxes. Comes on/off to a schedule as I always used to forget it and leave it on.

Hair straighteners is another good idea.

I turn my slow cooker on when I'm at work.
Have the kettle boiling when my alarm goes off

Daffyyellow · 26/10/2023 21:42

I use them in lamps. If I had more they’d be used for the slow cooker and iron.
