60.00 to get a fridge removed

My fridge and freezer both stopped working
I have manged to get a 2nd hand all in one fridge freezer . But now it's going to cost 60.00 each to get the old fridge and freezer removed so 120 in all. That's through the council website. I know it costs because of the gases etc. I know 120 is not much to many people but it is to me . I don't know how I will sort it. Just pissed of with the cost of everything. Etc .

I needed a three piece suite removed. The council wanted £90 per item. Ended up smashing it up and taking it to the tip bit by bit. I would've paid £90 for all of it but not £270!

Disgusting. Did you think that was a funny thing to say?

Moneybags2023 · 26/10/2023 20:51

People will take fridges/freezers from outside if its in working condition. Things like bed frames, chairs, drawers . Etc etc will go very easy . But not broken fridge /freezers.

Isn't a fridge mostly metal though? There is always someone going round scouting for skip contents or things left outside here. I have had 2 fridge or freezers vanished by leaving them out overnight. Someone was thrilled when we renovated downstairs to get a radiator and copper pipes.

I’ve used this service independently of buying from them. It worked well and was a lot better than our council service which is not super expensive like yours but is based on them coming any time in the next month which is a long time to have a broken down appliance in the garden!

Collect & Recycle

We’ll pick up your old appliance and recycle it for you

Ones that I see dumped in the street stay a while . The motor bit at the bottom often gets removed . But the fridge stays

I think it's something to do with the gasses? They're expensive to dispose of

molosolo · 26/10/2023 21:05

So not worth it for those who would trade it in for scrap metal. (Pressed post too soon)

Citrusandginger · 26/10/2023 21:15

Waste Electrical Recycling regulations mean retailers have to offer a recycling service. This is why if you're buying new it's often cheaper to get rid of the old versions through the same company.

Theokaycokey · 26/10/2023 21:26

Stick them both at the end of your drive and someone will take them. They are worth about £10 each in scrap metal. Advertise on a local community site asking from details of local scrap metal merchants. I did this and mine were gone within the hour.

Theokaycokey · 26/10/2023 21:27

Sorry, mine was a washer and dryer. Fridges might be harder due to gasses.

Which is why I explained that it costs less to have it removed when buying new.

There’s people on Facebook selling pages that collect these things for free in my area. Can you check elsewhere?
