Why does being healthy make me feel ill?!

It happens every time. I decide to eat healthier. I give up booze, go to bed earlier - I eat pretty well normally but go harder by cutting out sugary crap. By day 2 I have a splitting horrendous headache (like pressure) and feel like shit. What is this?!

Maybe withdrawal from caffeine

burntoutnurse · 26/10/2023 12:15

I hear ya. I'm about 3 months in, lost about 10lb but feeling shocking. Exhausted all the time! Headaches every single day, I don't drink tea or coffee either or caffeine!

Randyvoo · 26/10/2023 12:16

No I keep the caffeine - I love a good coffee and have about 3 mugs a day. But I use a super good brand :-)

Yeah, it's withdrawal. Push through for at least a couple of weeks.

Why?! It doesn't make any sense! Aren't we meant to feel great? Maybe we do need all the stimulus from the crap stuff 😂

Like withdrawal from sugar/alcohol?

OP posts:
Olika · 26/10/2023 12:18

Withdrawal symptoms. I was hooked on Pepsi/coke for years. Once I stopped I went through feeling really ill for some time before it all cleared.

yeekls · 26/10/2023 12:18

Have you majorly cut down on any food groups? I tried giving up chocolate once and ended up getting headaches, haven't tried since Grin

RudsyFarmer · 26/10/2023 12:19

What are you eating instead?

TomatoSandwiches · 26/10/2023 12:21

It will be from cutting down the alcohol and sugars, it will pass in a week or so, I would take paracetamol for the headaches and stay hydrated.

Randyvoo · 26/10/2023 12:21

I'm eating what I normally eat just not eating stuff that's high sugar. So I'm not cutting calories and I'm having carbs (though later in the day)

WhisperingAngle · 26/10/2023 12:22

It's sugar - stopping my sugar consumption gave me a dreadful headache for the first few days. It gets better!

Randyvoo · 26/10/2023 12:22

Maybe it is as simple as just "something's changed." Makes sense

TallulahG · 26/10/2023 12:26

Definitely sugar withdrawal! I get horrible headaches when I have a sugar break.

WeRateSquirrels · 26/10/2023 12:26

Yup, sugar withdrawal.

BananaHamster · 26/10/2023 12:30

Withdraws from sugar. It'll take about a month for your body to readjust.

aswarmofmidges · 26/10/2023 12:31

The person who is still feeling crap months later is also losing weight - so that would probably explain that

Healthy eating without losing weight should settle in a week or two

burntoutnurse · 26/10/2023 12:38

But in three months in and still feeling shite? How does that work?

I'm calorie counting. Smaller portions. Have switched my usual choc for the low cal ones (Cadbury delights things!) I always drank sugar free drinks anyway. More exercise which I've built up gradually.

Is it cos I'm old? (41)

I'm genuinely don't feel any better. Though I can run now instead of walking and my nails are growing well Grin

Randyvoo · 26/10/2023 12:41

I'm early 40s too @burntoutnurse - wouldn't be surprised if that's part of it

OrigamiOwl · 26/10/2023 12:41

Sounds like suger withdrawal. I get terrible headaches and feel rubbish when I try and ditch suger.

Queucumber · 26/10/2023 12:42

Drinking plenty of water helps. That and getting more sleep.

Randyvoo · 26/10/2023 12:42

I am still having sugar but I'm more cautious eg because I feel shit today I had some cherries with full fat yoghurt and a few squares of dark Lindt. But prior to that I would eat healthily and then have massive binges on shit sugar (sweets, ice cream, processed biscuits) when I got knackered in the afternoon

Hibye23289 · 26/10/2023 12:47

Yes its the sugar withdrawal, I am a massive choc addict but day 19 wkthout any and at first I get horrendous headaches usually

TBOM · 26/10/2023 12:54

YY to sugar withdrawal. Took me a few weeks to get through the other side.

BlueEyedPeanut · 26/10/2023 12:55

Another one here saying sugar withdrawal. Been there. Banging headache, tiredness, disruptive sleep, peeing a lot, mood swings 😬
