Is it still a limit of 100ml?

Haven't flown for years

I mean onboard your carry on luggage, not in the hold

Each individual container no more than 100ml. No more than 10 such containers. Must be in a clear 20cm x 20cm bag.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/10/2023 07:53

Yep 100ml per container, up to 10 allowed usually (they must all fit in one plastic bag). Thats hand baggage, there's no limit in hold baggage.

At most airports its still up to 100ml per item and must fit in a litre bag total

The odd airport has the new fancy scanner.

You can have a lot more than 10! I had about 35 last week with little pots of this and that, plus mascara etc.

ApolloandDaphne · 26/10/2023 08:00

Definitely allowed more than 10. I can fit a lot of tiny containers in that little bag.

FallingAutumnLeaf · 26/10/2023 08:08

From most airports: no more than 1l, in maxium 100ml containers, fitting into a resealable 20cmx20cm plastic, see-through bag.

From my tiny local airport - max container size 2l, no restrictions on total volume.

Check the airport - and bear in mind it may be different for the return.

Chersfrozenface · 26/10/2023 08:13

The total amount of liquid must not be more than 1litre. That's 1000 millilitres.

As PPs have said, decant liquids and creams into the smallest possible bottles and pots. Things like mascara and lipstick tend to be between 5 and 10 millilitres.

notimagain · 26/10/2023 08:13

Department of Transport (DfT) are the overall authority, though there may be airport variations (if there are they are usually more strict)..

Not sure if new scanners actually change the allowed volume or just avoid the need for liquid to be scanned separately:

From the DfT

"...if you do take liquids in your hand luggage:

  • containers must hold no more than 100ml
  • containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
  • contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
  • the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
  • you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person"

There are some airports with no limits(London City is one iirc). Up to 100ml containers in a plastic bag is the norm . Once through security you can have greater.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/10/2023 08:19

Yes, they are rolling out 'fancy new scanners' over the next few months, by which time we'll be free from this nonsense and be able to take up to 2 litres of liquids in our hand luggage. Also won't need to separate out electronics etc.

But until then we're limited to the max 100 ml per container, numbering no more than will fit in the sealable plastic bag.

We flew to Europe last week and were allowed to bring our full metal water flasks (500ml) on board as hand luggage. From Luton; I was very surprised!

Out of interest were they full when they were screened?

Yes, and I asked the staff member at the security check whether it was really OK to take them full, which he confirmed.

Interesting, thanks.

For a while even empty water bottles were not allowed through at some airports, then common sense kicked in and it was deemed OK to take empty containers through to be refilled airside, e.g. from water fountains.

Hopefully any relaxations will survive the next few months.

FloweryName · 26/10/2023 08:39

I’ve never heard the limit of ten 100ml containers. You can have as many as you like as long as they fit in the bag. You can get clear bags on Amazon that fit more in than the ones they give you at the airport. I flew from Heathrow last week with one of those and about 20 bits in it and it was fine.

PearlClutzsche · 26/10/2023 08:56

Surely the water bottles were purchased after security though?
You can buy big shampoos etc. in the airport shops after security, too.

Finteq · 26/10/2023 08:59

We went through at Manchester.

They didn't check how many plastic bags you used.

@ichundich said metal flasks (I'm assuming the sort of thing walkers/hikers use) not water bottles.

ssd · 26/10/2023 09:08

Thanks everyone

You can, but in many cases, you have to remember that you can't bring them back, if you don't have hold luggage or coming back through an airport with a new CT scanner.
