stupidly kept white wine in fridge for 5 weeks (unopened)

I don't usually drink wine but was gifted a nice bottle of white and put it in the fridge unopened about 5 weeks ago. I have guests coming on Friday eve and was going to get the wine out but realised wine should have only been put in the fridge 1-2 days in advance of drinking. Will the wine be ok to serve? As I don't usually drink wine I'm worried I won;t notice if the flavour has been impaired but my guests might. It has a cork and has been stored on a shelf on its side.
Shall I risk it or buy another bottle?

It'll be fine.

cakeorwine · 25/10/2023 22:17

Should it ?

I never knew that - but don't some supermarkets keep white wine in the fridges?

Janieforever · 25/10/2023 22:18

That’s fine, I keep mine in the fridge.

Ive had a bottle in the fridge for 6 months which I plan on drinking after ive given birth. Didnt know it shouldn't be in a fridge..

Notcookie · 25/10/2023 22:18

I keep white in the fridge all the time. It'll be fine.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 25/10/2023 22:18

This is a completely alien concept.
I'm sure the wine will be okay, but just in case you should get another bottle and do a taste test with the one from the fridge. Just in case it's gone ick.

RoyKentFanclub · 25/10/2023 22:19

I have a wine fridge. All white wine lives in it permanently. Never had an issue

Doglover19 · 25/10/2023 22:19

Well you learn something every day ..

Whoknowswhatanymore · 25/10/2023 22:19

it will be perfectly fine.

Pinotwoman82 · 25/10/2023 22:23

I’ve had a wine in the fridge since February, I’m now not sure if that will be ok? It’s a very posh pinot 😬

Changingplace · 25/10/2023 22:24

I’ve never heard that before in my life, unopened it’ll be absolutely fine (tbh even opened I’d give it a try rather than waste wine!)

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 25/10/2023 22:25

I would be surprised if there is anything wrong with it (but I’ve never had wine in the fridge Taft long 😂)

Depends if you're Hugh Johnson or not really

Circumferences · 25/10/2023 22:26

How do you think pubs store their wine? It's mostly in a fridge....

YellowChrysnthemum · 25/10/2023 22:27

Wine cellars are cold, wine is stored in them for years, bottles are habitually stored on their sides. Supermarket instructions are not the law, and frequently contain ridiculous advice that is aimed, imo, to make you unnecessarily throw away perfectly good food and drink to buy more from them. In any case, if your guests have any manners they will bring you some wine so you will have a back up just in case.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 25/10/2023 22:32

I'd say one bottle isn't enough

squashyhat · 25/10/2023 22:38

Send it over here - I'll try it for you.

CaptainBarnaclesandthevegemals · 25/10/2023 22:41

Are you show the 1-2 days thing isn’t talking about how long white wine will keep in the fridge after it’s been opened?

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 25/10/2023 22:42

You are being totally unreasonable. Dig a wine cellar now.

Are we talking Tesco's £8.99 white wine here, it won't give a darn.

icelollycraving · 25/10/2023 22:42

The wine will be absolutely fine. One bottle is not enough!

gotomomo · 25/10/2023 22:44

I keep a few bottles in mine, never had issues

PinkRoses1245 · 25/10/2023 22:45

Of course that’s fine, what do you think people with wine fridges do? And wine sits in cellars for years which can be very cold

macshoto · 25/10/2023 22:45

Very unlikely to be a problem, unless you are in the habit of keeping really stinky food in your fridge - and even then, this relatively short period is unlikely to be a problem.

Biggest thing will be making sure you let it warm up a bit and don't serve it at fridge temperature. Serving good white wine fridge cold removes most of the flavour - unless it's champagne, let it come up from 4C to about 12C for serving.
