Question for those with young adult children still living at home

I’m writing a book and trying to make description of a character’s bedroom seem authentic. I’m wondering what kinds of things women in their early 20s still living with their parents have in their rooms – on the walls, on the shelves, etc? All ideas welcome!

TIA

My sister is 26 and lives at home - her room is eclectic and pretty cluttered, but it’s interesting and colourful.

A gallery wall with lots of prints and drawings
A vintage dresser with perfume and lots of make up in different pots.
Fairy lights
Mismatched prints on cushions on bed
A big fluffy throw
lots of clothes spilling out of the wardrobe. Shoes in boxes stacked up
a clothes dummy with hats, scarves & belts on it.
Books piled up in the corner near a chair.
Salt lamp on desk.
Her cat lounging on the bed.
Usually a candle or two lit.

Books, snow globes from travels, perfumes, candles, mirrors, fluffy cushions and blankets, keyboard, guitar, jewellery, nail polish, make up, skincare, photos & flags, paintings, sketches, drawings

It's completely chaotic, film posters, shelves with a mix of adult books, university textbooks, teen fiction and childhood books. Make up etc scattered all over the desk and dirty clothes spilling out of the washing hamper.

Should add double bed, weighted throw, collection of used glasses

Heavy metal posters on walls and her collection of vintage porcelain dolls on all shelves. Her wood whittling stuff is out and shavings usually in carpet. Also half whittled beautiful wooden animals. Her guitar, her record player and records, books, ornamental peacocks as she loves them. Loads of seaglass. I love that her room shows her individuality to a tee.

Wow, so many ideas, thank you all so much!

Groot model
Sloth stuff... lots of sloth stuff.

Daily Mail lazy

If you really want to know what 19 year old DD’s room is like right now… imagine an entire wardrobe’s worth of clothes thrown on the floor as she couldn’t decide what to wear earlier plus a few cups and plates that she hasn’t been bothered to take down to the kitchen yet…

Yep. Been there. Solo mum.

Does get better, thank fuck. (Mine's a son).

Jewellery and makeup, bottles and bottles of perfume and nail varnishes. Framed photos of her and her boyfriend, lots of photos of friends on a cork board. Full-length mirror, shoes everywhere and cuddly toys and cushions on her bed! Also random nods to Gilmore Girls and Friends!! She's 22

Gratedpotato · 26/10/2023 22:26

No soft toys or really anything from when she was younger. That all went before her 20s started.

The walls are white and she has a big rug on the floor as its just floorboards in her room.
There is a pinboard above her bed, it has photos with family and friends, tickets from concerts and theatre shows, festival wristbands etc.
Framed art prints on one of the walls
Several plants mostly real and a few plastic.
Shelf above the desk has some files and books from uni, as well as quite a lot of trinkets, bowls that hold jewellery, perfumes and candles
Desk has her laptop and usually a mug or a drinks glass.
Its generally very clean and tidy, which was a nice change from how teenage her kept it.

Half a dozen plants, Jellycats, photos and postcards from her travels and uni days, sports kit on the floor, stuff from Glossier, 3 or 4 original paintings which were 18th, 21st & graduation presents.

@Twin22 I would start your own thread. This one is very light hearted and you're unlikely to get people looking who can help

Fairy lights.
Lots of expensive makeup.
Piles of earrings.
Full length mirror.
A shelf with a few childhood teddies and dollies.
Loads of books - chicken lit, university subject, biographies.

mathanxiety · 28/12/2023 19:20
