I'm planning on going to some semi local foreign supermarkets soon as their fruit and veg always look amazing, and wondered what your top things are to buy in them. There's a Chinese supermarket on one side of the road and then a few Middle Eastern, Indian, and African supermarkets in the same stretch.

I want to try to go with a rough list rather than just being tempted by random things (which will almost certainly happen anyway) so any suggestions would be great.

Oh yes, Lebanese flatbread (often labelled Naan). Makes great pizza bases.

PaminaMozart · 25/10/2023 19:46

Oh yes, Lebanese Flatbread!
Add Za'tar and you have a delicious pizza, aka Manooshe:

Plantain crisps from the Indian shop, the most moreish snack ever, can’t stop eating it

JustAMinutePleass · 25/10/2023 19:57

Frozen wholemeal paratha
Frozen ginger / garlic
Unless you’re buying meat African food is cheaper from Indian supermarkets (most of the largest shops aren’t India-Indian, they’re Afro-Indian)
The best dates are from Tunisia, Saudi & the UAE - you will only find them in Pakistani supermarkets
It’s worth travelling to VB&Sons (London) for nuts and Jalpur Mills (Leicester) for gluten free flours.

Big bags of lentils and spices from Indian/Pakistani shops to decant into smaller jars. Big sacks of rice/flour. There is a Turkish flour called Aytac which is really good.

Go to the kitchenware section and get a hot pot thing to keep your naan/Roti warm.

RumNotRun · 25/10/2023 21:09

Wow, there's some fantastic ideas on here. Thank you all so much. I'm lucky that I live in a very multicultural area so there are loads of international shops which I haven't really gone to before. I saw the biggest onions ever when I walked past a few weeks ago and they have inspired me to go there to do a proper shop on payday.

I will try to remember to report back with my purchases!

Have you not seen the watermelons over summer😂

KingsleyBorder · 25/10/2023 21:33

Lao Gan Ma crispy chilli in oil, delicious on pretty much anything!

Boxes of frozen tiger prawns, miles better than supermarket ones.

unusual fresh herbs like Vietnamese hot mint and laksa leaves.

hope this helps

Exploring foreign supermarkets is a fantastic way to discover new ingredients and flavors. Here are some top items to consider picking up in the various types of stores you mentioned:

Exotic Meats and Seafood: Some African stores offer a selection of unique meats and seafood, such as goat, crocodile, and tilapia.

Remember that every store may have unique offerings, so don't hesitate to ask the store staff for recommendations and guidance, especially if you're unfamiliar with specific ingredients. It's all part of the fun of exploring different cultures through their cuisine. Happy shopping and cooking.

Usually have a good choice of cooking oils and vinegars. I sometimes by 5litre of white vinegar in the food section to use for cleaning. Also KTC almond oil is usually cheap, good for skin and hair.

SoapCollector · 25/10/2023 21:46

Buy not by!

Normalsizedsalad · 25/10/2023 21:56

Cheap rice!

tunainatin · 25/10/2023 22:15

I shop regularly in these places in addition to normal supermarkets and get:
Big bags of spices
Fresh herbs
Tomatoes
Olive oil

Green tea
Good yoghurt

Dates
Tinned stuffed vineleaves
Frozen fish

Frozen paratha
Frozen stuffed potato balls
Tamarind chutney, green chutney
Sev

Spring rolls
Gyoza
Tofu puffs

Different flours - arepa flour, tapioca flour (for Brazilian cheese bread - google it - you’ll be addicted!)

Jars of chickpeas - much cheaper but exactly the same as the posh deli ones

Labneh balls

Next time I go I’m getting a kit to make stuffed puris to recreate the chaat bombs from Mowgli, I saw them the last time I went but I was buying enough already

JimnJoyce · 25/10/2023 22:25

Tahini
Falafel
Fouls Mesdames
Okra
Halva
Tomatoes
Coriander
If they have a bakery attached - flatbreads

snurtifier · 25/10/2023 22:28

The meat counters in Asian supermarkets are amazing if you like offal and other bits and bobs that don't get sold in British butchers. (I've been trying to perfect a Pakistani dish called paya which is curried sheep's feet.)

Other things I love: Pran pickles, especially the olive and the satkora ones. Tinned chickpea curry, especially the one that's called chatpati choley. Curry leaf, the most aromatic herb ever. Jars of chickpeas and beans, for some reason they're much nicer than they are in tins. Namak paray, the most addictive snack ever.

Paradiseflycatcher · 25/10/2023 22:31

Indian supermarket -
Sandalwood soap
Big bunches of coriander and methi
Fresh vegetables such as small aubergines, fresh ginger and turmeric, bags of pulses and lentils, ghee, spices and spice mixes, and freshly cooked samosas if they have them.
Chinese supermarket - tofu in various forms, jars of sauce/paste such as black bean, big bottles of soy sauce (Kikkoman or Malay ketcap Manis), Chinese vegetables such as choy sum and Chinese leeks, fresh dim sum, fresh bakery items, random other things such as snacks and drinks
Mediterranean/Turkish supermarket -
Olives, cous cous, cheeses such as halloumi etc, good yogurt, tahini, pomegranate molasses, baklava in various types
Ooh I love a good "foreign" supermarket. Manchester is great for this (Wing Yips!)

Paradiseflycatcher · 25/10/2023 22:32

Also date syrup from the Turkish supermarket, this stuff is heavenly

Paradiseflycatcher · 25/10/2023 22:39

Boxes of incredible mangos, when in season, from Indian/Pakistani supermarkets. Just the best mangos ever

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/10/2023 22:40

Lebanese tahini is the best. I also find the spices, like ginger, cardomom and cinnamon in packets are much better than the little jars in the supermarket.
Interesting chutneys, like tamarind.
The nuts - walnuts and pistachios from Iran and Turkey are also much better than Sainsbo's ones.

Paradiseflycatcher · 25/10/2023 22:40

I love this thread! And it's reminded me that I have some plunders from my latest shop in the fridge to make a palak paneer curry tomorrow 😊

BabyStopCryin · 25/10/2023 22:49

Big bags of rice, fresh herbs and ginger, baby cucumbers, pickles, feta cheese, distilled mint/rose/dill water, dried herbs, berries, saffron, jams (orange blossom), sweets (fruit leather), pastries… whatever looks good 😋

SuperNewMe · 25/10/2023 22:52
