Just moved in to my 2 bed house
I will be living here alone
Rang the current supplier and they've said my D/D will be £163 a month
That seems a lot to me
Or is that about right ?

We pay £170 - 3 bed detached, 2 adults, 2 electric vehicles charged at home.

OldTinHat · 24/10/2023 11:46

Three bed terrace, single adult. £60 per month combined.

Seems expensive to me.

They are probably basing it on the previous occupiers. If you don't have a smart meter, make sure you take and submit regular meter readings, ideally monthly. After a few months you should be able to ask them to reassess the DD.

It's likely they have just used the average spend for the type of property you are in and will adjust once they realise what your actual usage is. Rather you pay more than end up in debt.

It seems high we pay around £135 for two bed end terrace. Two adults two children. Recently dropped form about £160.

I pay £77 DD In a 2 bed house living alone. In the spring, summer and autumn my bill is less than this and in the winter it's more than this but I've enough in credit for direct debit to stay the same year around. I am careful with heating though and don't have really lengthy showers.

Planesplanesplanes · 24/10/2023 12:33

Your expenditure will be higher over winter and you won’t have accumulated credit over the summer so they will be factoring that in too.

PinkRoses1245 · 24/10/2023 12:35

Yea that’s a lot, definitely shop round - don’t just stick with your current supplier

Pipistrellus · 24/10/2023 12:36

We pay £70 direct debit for two of us in a two bed house so yes that seems high!

MintJulia · 24/10/2023 12:37

I pay £134 for a 4 bed, old but recently insulated house.

It depends on your house - old? new? well-insulated? semi? terraced? , how it's heated, the previous owners' usage, how warm you like your house, how much hot water you use etc.

Whatever your starting DD, after a few months, you'll be able to change it as your actual usage becomes clear.

dementedpixie · 24/10/2023 12:53

Don't go by the monthly direct debit as that tells you nothing. Its the price per kwh and standing charge that's important. I'd start off with what they suggest and submit monthly readings and see if the direct debit is in line with your readings or whether it is too much at which point it can be reduced

But the price is the same everywhere, more or less.

The only way the OP can pay less is to use less than that amount pm, which she doesn't need to change supplier to achieve.

gotomomo · 24/10/2023 13:19

No one can tell you - new? Old? Insulation? Double glazing? How warm do you set your thermostat?
We pay £145, 3 people, modern house

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/10/2023 13:39

We pay 330 a month 3 bed semi

megletthesecond · 24/10/2023 13:43

It's probably not far wrong if you're going into winter. Make sure you send them readings on the same day every month and you should know where you stand come February.
I pay £170 a month for a 3 bed and 3 of us. But I'm £900 in credit.
