Garden birds: jays

Posting here for traffic.
Jays come to my garden and I put out peanuts in the shell for them, but squirrels tend to get to the nuts first. Yesterday I watched a squirrel, several times, chase a jay off from where it was about to pick up a nut!
Is there such a thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder that’s suitable for jays?

Apparently yes! I'm hoping that the squirrel proof bird feeder I have just bought my husband is anyway. Part of the trick is to put them away from trees, fences or anything else a squirrel can jump from, and they can jump a long way!

There are loads online, hopefully somebody will be along to recommend a specific type.

Think possibly a tall pole with a feeding platform might work.

Put squirrel baffle collars both above and below platform. Locate far enough away from anything the squirrel can launch from directly onto platform.

Hope you find something- very envious of your jays.

Tall pole and baffle collars sounds like a good idea; thank you. Only thing is I have a fairly small London garden (only the width of my house, which is a narrowish terrace conversion), so it’d have to be bang in the middle to thwart the squirrels.
I do love seeing the jays and feel very lucky ☺️ but I feel like they need to learn to be more smart, bolshy city birds and both get to the food quicker and stand up for themselves over it! (the magpies chase them off as well).

I bought a squirrel proof feeder once. I watched in amazement as a squirrel managed to take off the cage with the nuts in off the hanging part, carry it away along the fence, hopped onto the roof off a bungalow at the back and disappeared with it over the ridge!

We've got ones that have a spring inside them, if anything heavier than a finch lands on it the spring closes a little flap to the feeding portal.

Not sure how you could do it for a jay, they are too big for my feeder.

Get a pine Martin?

Grin Squirrels are little feckers, but you kind of have to admire them.

Yeah, that wouldn't work for a jay.
I'd LOVE a resident pine marten! Grin

One of those domed squirrel baffles works for me.
You also get the odd bit of entertainment when a squirrel is trying to work out why it can’t get to the feeders.

Greaterwaterparsnip · 24/10/2023 14:39

I hung mine on string which was too flimsy for the squirrels to climb down then watched one climb a nearby sunflower and gently use its weight to sway towards the feeder!

@Greaterwaterparsnip you've got to admire their ingenuity!

I gave up trying to keep the squirrels away - the work out the squirrel proof ones, climb up the bird feeder stand if I move it, etc. I bought a second stand in the end and keep cheap peanuts on one and it seems to keep them occupied. The little so and sos blithely ignore the hundreds of acorns littered across the garden!

What kind of feeder is the baffle on?
