MRSA how big a deal to test positive prior to submission for surgery?

Swabs taken as part of routine pre op for surgery in Jan have come back positive.
I don't know how usual this is or what the implications are .
I've had a sore in one nostril for a very long time and wonder if that's connected.
Will I have to test clear before op?
Submission = admission

Doesn't it just mean you have to wash with a special shampoo and body wash stuff and have some antibiotics before the op?

You will get given surgical scrub to wash with prior to surgery. I seem to remember you lather it up everywhere and wait 3 minutes to rinse off including your hair.

Ok , thank you . Sounds less worrying than I thought.

Dd and I tested positive when I gave birth. Obviously wasn’t surgery but it just meant they took extra PPE precautions when doing anything that could lead to contamination.

They just deep clean the theatre after and the recovery space. It’s fine op don’t worry it doesn’t impact whether you can have surgery or not.

It sounds quite serious though if they have to deep clean the theatre .,

They would do that if you were in a ward too when you left. Your bed space anyway. It’s to prevent the spread. There’s a few bugs that they recover you in theatre if you have it. MRSA isn’t a big big risk. Don’t worry op honestly. The risk isn’t to you it’s to others. You already have it. So they just give everything an extra clean.

Well they have to control the spread. Your infection may be mild but if they don't decontaminate properly the next patient could be say an 80 year old woman who lives in residential care who takes it back, spreads it round the rest of the care home and ends up with a very severe infection in her wound.

Thanks all.
I think I'm a little freaked out , probably silly.
But I'm in my 70,s and have both friends and relatives with compromised immune systems .
I don't want to pass it on to anyone in or out of hospital.
I wonder why I've got it .

Op some people are just carriers.

Octisan is what we use in hospital when the babies test positive for it and we treat the whole family.

Take precautions and wash your hands regularly, it can be spread by skin to skin contact.

On a more positive note the octisan wash did wonders for my hair! I still use it once a month now Grin

Thank you @burntoutnurse . Intellectually I know what you are saying but I think emotionally I'm thinking I'm carrying something which could be dangerous to others .
No different from flu maybe .
But for instance my partner has eczema his feet get very very sore with inflamed toes , peeling skin and itching. They don't respond to fungal creams and now I'm wondering if it's MRSA.
And as said I have older relatives with very compromised immune systems .
I worry that I'm not clean Blush

Sorry that you're burnt out . Nursing must be pretty demanding at the best of times ,I can't bear to think what it must be like now.

Thank you.

Might be worth having his wounds swabbed just in case.

Mrsa is the super big it was portrayed in the media all them years ago,

I remember being swabbed at the time before I went in for an op. I was positive, I still had my op I just got my own side room lol which was nice when recovering

I hope your op goes well
