Trick or treaters from afar

I am probably being a real grump but I've just found out that most of the parents at my child's school deliberately drive or walk up to where we live to trick or treat because it's "better". We don't live in a posh gated community that hands out £20 notes or hires scare actors or anything, it's just a typical housing estate popular with families. Like the other surrounding areas. The past two years, since we've lived here, we have had a queue at our door for an hour or so until we run out of treats that I've spent £10 or so on. Now I found out it's because parents see our neighbourhood as a "sure thing", and a lot of these families aren't from down the road. We have a dog and a baby, so getting up for the door can be irritating but I didn't mind when it was for our community. Now I'm feeling like I'm supplying sugar for a 5 mile radius Blush would you be annoyed?

We get this where we live. Vauxhall Zafira's full of grabby kids and entitled parents coming round to harvest sweets from the residential area that is seen as a sure bet - i.e. it's the part of of town where there is some sense of community.m

I don't think you're the grinch OP.

"Maximum return" 🙄 As if parents want their children loaded up with as much sugar as possible!

They're not scheming to get their hands on a tiny portion of your £10 worth of sweets.

It's more likely they've chosen your area because it's walkable or safe or well lit or has a lot of decorations in close proximity.

I don't know any parents who are keen for their children to get as many sweets as possible. It's more about the group having a good experience.

If you don't want to take part then just opt out.

We leave a bowl out near the front door and it stays there even once it's empty. People know not to knock as we've run out

You snooze you lose 🤣

No one does Halloween on our street as there are no families (all students or shared houses of young professionals) so we have to go to other streets.

One of the very many advantages of living in a flat. No trick and treating!

yea that would annoy me too op.

mondaytosunday · 23/10/2023 13:07

No. And only £10? That won't go far in my neighbourhood. We must have over 100 kids come by, mostly from the surrounding streets but I'd be happy if they were from further away. I used to take my kids to other neighbourhoods. Sometimes because they went out with friends, or as you say, it's a area known for welcoming kids!
I do remember one very disappointing year when we moved, my kids excitedly got dressed up, but no one was doing it. We got one visit from a family on holiday and they said they been walking for ages. The following year we moved and it was so much better!

No not at all annoyed. It's one night a year. I assume everyone in your neighbourhood puts effort in and that's why people come. There is an area of the estate near us that so that. Put loads of effort in. It's great. I'd happily be part of that for a tenner. Just put a sign up saying you have no more treats left when you run out.
