How much would you expect to pay

Hello. Just garnering some opinions here. How much would you expect to pay for the following:

Dessert buffet for 10 adults and 6 children with a selection of:

Brownies
Blondies
Mini Yule logs
School cake bites
Christmas cake bites
Mince pies
Individual Sherry trifles
Cookies
Christmas themed shortbread

Roughly how much of each item would you expect per person?

Useful info:

I'm in Yorkshire
I'm the baker (but I don't usually do this kind of catering) - I am insured and have a good hygiene certificate from the council

I don't think people would be able to have one each of all these things so I would do 16 of each and there should be leftovers. £160 all in?

I have never ordered similar so have no idea of market prices.

AdultingIncorrectly · 22/10/2023 18:55

How much of each depends on size. Will there be small sizes so people can have one of everything each? Or larger sizes and people are expected to just have 2-3 items each?

Whatever you charge people will moan it’s too much but the amount of work, ingredients and cost of using the ovens and equipment for all that, is likely to be more than I can guess. What have you costed it as pp/ph?

£10 seems too cheap but £15 too much.
£12.50 for adults, £9 for children?

Thank you!

Me neither. I can add up ingredients etc but I'm still not sure what people will expect.

Are the bites going up be literally one bite?

Torganer · 22/10/2023 19:56

Most would have 3-4 per person if they were small. I hate puddings so would have none! I would say adults and children would probably eat the same amount in this instance. Box of brownie bites from somewhere like Costco would work out about 30p per bite. As yours are homemade, they will be more expensive, but I wouldn’t pay more than £1 for a small square of a brownie. I would say £5pp.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/10/2023 19:58

What people expect and what is a fair price to you as the supplier doesn't necessarily match up.

If you properly cost ingredients, electricity etc and your time, they will look quite expensive but that doesn't mean you should work down to a price unless you're feeling charitable rather than looking to earn a living.

As a guide, here is a successful small scale brownie supplier based in Leeds.

But unless the portions are tiny I'd expect people to average maybe 2 items?

Do you want to do it as it sounds a faff? Personally I’d do 1 item of each per person at £1 an item it’s £144. It could be catered by Aldi for £30-40 but that’s a choice for the customer. I wouldn’t compete with a supermarket!

Rattysparklebum · 22/10/2023 20:13

I notice some people will pile their plate up at a buffet then leave loads so you will need to make more than you think.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/10/2023 20:16

But I don't think they're all going to eat all 9 items unless they're literally bite size and even then its a lot.

Is there 'main course' food as well as the cake buffet?

FallingAutumnLeaf · 22/10/2023 20:26

Hmm, deserts are well over £5 these days.

So, £8 a head? Maybe £5 for kids.

Numbers of each will depend on size.. I'd make them small enough so people would want 3-4 different ones.

Thanks all!

Regards 'bite' size. The list was provided to me so it's something I need to consider.

I have no idea on the savoury part of the party. I've never provided anything for this customer, she contacted me via a local page. I usually bake large decorated cookies which are very popular locally. I love baking and it would be nice to do something different. I'm usually limited by time and I can make the cookies in my sleep.

I think I'll have to add up the ingredients and go from there.

I thought £12 per head
