I stole my food shop ....

Well I think I did accidentally
So yesterday I was in M&S around lunch time
I went to self serve till and she said contactless wasn't working and the tills were running slow.
So I put my shopping through and enter my card
It's stuck on "pin ok" for ages then finally it says on card holder "approved " remove card
So I do
Then the actual till itself just keeps showing that it's processing
I wait a minute then just walk off as I thought it had gone through
Checked my banking and nothing in pending and the money is still in my account
I'm worried I haven't paid and technically stole my shopping

Do you think eventually it will come out ?
I go in the shop all the time
I'm worried they think I'm a thief if it didn't go through

I’m sure the legal definition of theft is roughly ‘to intentionally permanently deprive someone of property that belongs to another’

You had no intent to do this. The system is at fault, not you, don’t give it another thought.

Occasionally I will see a payment disappear on my banking app.

Sometimes happens with m&s, Asda and occasionally with Aldi. It usually then comes out within a few days.

I would leave it for now. Likely, it will come out in a few days.

I once accidentally ‘stole’ yellow stickered meat at self service, depriving a major supermarket of about £2. No idea how the machine didn’t catch it or I missed it but it wasn’t intentional and I was charged for everything else. I was a bit worried but then I consoled myself thinking of the many times you get home and realise your multi buys or meal deals haven’t discounted properly…

You had no intention of not paying and your payment was approved so you didn't steal anything
I think the amount will probably debit in a couple of days but if not, enjoy your shop
My conscience would be clear

If it said approved take card, I wouldn’t even think to check my bank statement.

If you’re still concerned, go and tell them in the shop what happened to stop you from worrying about it.

I work in a shop with self checkouts. If someone walks away without the payment going through we check CCTV and call the police. The onus is on the customer to make sure the payment goes through.

When you say you work there, what do you do, because these days it feels like we do everything ourselves..
