Would you go to a&e?

With persistent headache (3 weeks), thunder clap headaches on one side roughly every 5 minutes & left sided weakness?

I went last week with these symptoms after I collapsed (didn't lose consciousness but was effectively 'locked in' for about 10 mins..couldn't move/speak, only way to communicate was with my eyes.

6 hour wait for ambulance, 7 hour wait in a&e. I self discharged after bloods & CT came back clear because it was 2am and I have young teens at home. Would have been there another 18-24 hours waiting to see neurologist.

Headache has intensified and I keep having what I can only describe as mini seizures, lasting approximately 10 seconds giving a very strange sensation in my head and I'm unable to do anything at all until it passes (my collapse was like a longer version of these)

Would you go back to a&e or wait to see GP (who is likely to send me there anyway)

you need to see a neurologist sound like fits my daughter has these

debka · 22/10/2023 10:03

Did you see your GP after your A&E attendance last week?

CharlotteFlax · 22/10/2023 10:07

If things have changed since last time, then yes, go.
And go now (early) so you've a chance of a shorter wait.

Yes, he's made a referral to outpatient neurology but waiting times are 6-9 months.
I've barely been able to get out of bed for the past 2 days because of the pain in my head.

The headache is on the right side and weakness is on the left side of my body.

It does sound serious - is there anyone else who can take care of the kids for a couple of days?

jessycake · 22/10/2023 10:28

I would go back , see if anyone can look after your kids and wait it out

MargaretThursday · 22/10/2023 10:41

Yes go. Could be TIA.

Lifeinlists · 22/10/2023 10:57

Go back and stay there this time. Sounds like you may need an mri as CT scans don't pick everything up eg strokes, or you may need other tests.
I wouldn't hang about with those symptoms.

Unithorn · 22/10/2023 10:59

Yes go back and make sure you stay until you have been seen. I know it's hard when you have children to consider but playing with your health like this isn't going to do them any favours either.

IHateLegDay · 22/10/2023 11:12

100% go to A&E

UnevenBalance · 22/10/2023 11:16

A&E and please don’t leave this time.
Organise to have someone to look after your dcs. They’ll have to cope until you are well enough to come out of hospital.

UnevenBalance · 22/10/2023 11:17

Oh and btw, I wouldn’t wait fir an ambulance either. Take a taxi or have someone to take you there. Don’t waste another 6~7 hours waiting for them.

BerriesNutsConkers · 22/10/2023 11:21

Go back and be prepared to be there a long time and possibly admitted. Take what you need and make arrangements for your children just in case.

HowNice23 · 22/10/2023 11:29

Echoing others, arrange backup for kids if at all possible, if you can, charge your phone, get some change for snack/water machines, even pack a sandwich or something to eat and even pack some comfy pjs and slippers or sliders plus earplugs and charging cable etc in case they admit you which does sound possible. If you go in expecting it to be the long haul it's less stressful if there is a wait. Hope you get seen soon it sounds horrendous and scary x

HowNice23 · 22/10/2023 11:30

Also agree don't wait for ambulance if you can get a cab it'll save you precious hours potentially x

legalseagull · 22/10/2023 12:01

Yes I'd go. It could be seizures or even a stroke. I wouldn't mess around with your symptoms. Good luck OP

somethingisnotquiteright · 22/10/2023 12:16

Thanks all. I'm going to go and just suck up the wait.
Managed to get mil to check in on the kids and stay overnight with them.

My husband in overseas with work but is flying back tomorrow evening so will have back up.

Wish me luck!

good luck,
speedy recovery

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/10/2023 12:28

A&E and word it in terms of stroke/TIA, not 'bad headaches'.

Aldicrispsareshit · 22/10/2023 13:20

I see you've made the decision to go in, good luck. You may not have a 7 hour wait with your symptoms, 7 hour waits are only for those who can wait for 7 hours... Hope you get to the bottom of it

Wallywobbles · 22/10/2023 15:56

Think carefully how to describe the pain. Headaches are likely to be dismissed.

FoodieToo · 22/10/2023 16:01

Definitely go and stay until they ascertain the cause. Don't take chances with your brain. And damage to it tends to be permanent so not worth the risk.
Sounds horrendous , hope you get relief soon .

Notcookie · 22/10/2023 16:11

I hope you are in A+E. Don't leave until you see a neurologist.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/10/2023 18:02

I'm glad you've gone
I hope you don't have to wait too long, but it's better than wondering what is wrong and having these symptoms

BerriesNutsConkers · 23/10/2023 08:39

Hope you have been seen and are on the way to getting an answer.
