Severe nausea with period

I've always had some mild nausea in the day or two leading up to my period but the last few (maybe last 4-5) the nausea has been severe and this month it's horrendous. It feels like morning sickness, I can't stomach anything. I'm on day 2 of my period. I suppose theoretically it's possible that this month it's a stomach bug, but no one else is ill, and my DDs tend to be the ones bringing bugs like that into the house. Plus it does feel very much like morning sickness.

Does anyone else get this, and does anything help?
I don't have particularly painful periods so I don't think it's caused by pain.
I'm reluctant to try the pill, I've tried it in the past and it caused nausea as well as very low mood. I think maybe I just don't react to hormones well - I also had severe morning sickness when pregnant.

Anyone?

Have you tried ibuprofen lysine? It's in migraine tablets and feminax. I find that if I take it for 2-3 days before period it reduces nausea a lot.

WeWereInParis · 22/10/2023 18:53

No, I've never even heard of it. I don't tend to need painkillers on my period but I'll definitely give this a go next month. Thanks

I think it's because ibuprofen blocks prostaglandins which cause the nausea. Only the lysine works for me though, not just regular ibuprofen.

I get mid cycle nausea and for the last couple of months have been sick on waking up on the first day of my period.

Haven't found anything that helps though.

Following for tips.

I'm rarely ill but have only recently made the connection that I've been ill every month in the night before my period. Full on extreme nausea and vomiting. I've been wondering whether it's a peri menopause symptom.
First I've heard of it anywhere sleaze so you have my sympathies - it's awful.

Botanica · 23/10/2023 17:56
  • anywhere else that should say!

I'm considering asking my GP for some cyclizine. I took it throughout my pregnancies for morning sickness, so wondering if it might help with this as well.

Hope the GP can help. I used to get nausea, vomiting and passing out and no-one would help.

That sounds awful. When you say "used to" I'm guessing it ended when periods ended? Rather than you found a magic cure?

@WeWereInParis I then developed some even stranger symptoms so I went on the pill after I almost crashed my car one month when the symptoms just appeared mid drive to work. Came off the pill two years ago and have had a handful since which I imagine we’re just like normal periods should be. Not had one for ten months so hoping that’s them done with. And hoping my daughter doesn’t develop whatever it was that happened to me!!

CopperLion · 23/10/2023 20:56

I had this for a while in my mid-30s. I also had pain though. The GP said it was due to hormonal changes. He offered me the pill, OTC painkillers, or suggested Feminax. Feminax didn’t do much and I didn’t want the others. I just stuck it out I’m afraid, and then it passed and hasn’t happened for a few years (I’m now early 40s, periods still regular). But wanted to reassure you that it’s a definite ‘thing’.

PhoneChargerCable · 23/10/2023 21:00

I get nausea mid cycle and sometimes the day before my period but it also coincides with hormonal migraine so I think the nausea (at least in my case) is part of the migraine symptoms.

Thehonestbadger · 23/10/2023 21:08

Oooh I saw this and my spidey senses tingled. I might be able to help.

I have this. I had two HG pregnancies (severe morning sickness) and everything seemed ok post babies until my youngest was around 1. Then all hell broke loose. My stomach suddenly tracked my cycle. Twice a month I would feel like I had HG again for a couple of days and realised this was during ovulation and my period. Hormone surges.
I tried to push through but it got worse for another year until I was literally just getting a couple of days a month where I was ‘normal’.

Im married to a doctor, I saw lots of doctors, no one had a clue BUT through trial and error I worked this out, try a mild anti acid daily (Omeprazole, famotadine…etc) and figure out what foods trigger you. For example I’ve cut out all dairy and that has helped a lot. I’m also careful with gluten, I can have it but in moderation and I tend to avoid it altogether during the worst days. It’s really made a significant difference.

Also, ask for buccastem tablets and this will relieve the nausea on the odd time you still get it. It’s very fast and very good. I use it once maybe every 3 months now which is much better than it was.

Im still seeing doctors but the leading theory is that it’s hormone driven IBS (I didn’t think it could be IBS as didn’t struggle much with my bowels but apparently some get nausea instead)

Probably TMI but I also suffered horrible burping at my worst. It’s calmed down now though x

Raisinganiguana · 23/10/2023 21:10

There is a migraine tablet that blocks nausea receptors and stops you feeling sick. You have to lie to the pharmacist though and say it’s for a migraine (when it’s for a hangover 😵)

Thehonestbadger · 23/10/2023 21:10

It’s worth noting I had tried allergy diets in the past without success it just took tweaking combinations and knowing my cycle to make it work.

Do you know what it's called? I have regular episodes of nausea that last for days at a time. It's really affecting my life and I would love to be able to take something that blocks it.

Signalbox · 23/10/2023 21:18

I have a lot of nausea OP but doesn't seem to be related to my cycle. But I am peri menopausal and I do wonder if it's related to hormones in some way. Bloody annoying though it gets you down.
