I had to wait 30 minutes for a trolley at the supermarket today

Not just any trolley but the only trolley I can use with my three year old who cannot sit unsupported so cannot use a regular trolley. I am 'lucky' that this supermarket has an adapted trolley because not all of them do. Everything in life just feels more complicated when you have a disability. I don't want to have to use online shopping because sometimes, like today, I just need a few bits and I want to browse before I buy and stuff is often goes out of stock between me placing the order and the delivery coming. I am just moaning I suppose but it would be nice to have more than one adapted trolley in a supermarket that serves a town with a population of over 140,000 (and that figure doesn't take into account all the outlying villages that also use supermarkets in that town).

I understand your frustration. You would probably have to ask them to add more specific trolleys....but that's not to say careless people will not take the additional trolly! Hmm

Dustpantsandbush · 21/10/2023 19:32

Tell them. 1 adapted trolley is ridiculous.

I was chatting to a manager about it, she said they did used to have a couple but they get stolen so she didn't see to think they'd be able to order more.

I did tell them.

Try messaging them, or writing to them. I did with our local supermarket when I had to wait three trips in a row and they got an extra trolley delivered within a week. Apparently they’re known to react if they know there is a demand for a specific type of trolley.

If they know there is a demand they might be as good where you are.

DaftQuestionForToday · 21/10/2023 19:36

Can you suggest they lock them so they don't get stolen/damaged/used by people who don't need them.

yes, it would be a hassle having to get one unlocked, but a much greater chance of actually getting one!!

PlantDoctor · 21/10/2023 19:36

I know you said you spoke with the manager, but if it's often a problem for you then it might be worth going over their heads to head office. A big chain supermarket likely has a huge budget, and if you speak with the right person (maybe an accessibility manager if such a team exists) then they might find some extra funding for another one that doesn't come directly from your local store's budget.

Needmorelego · 21/10/2023 19:38

Maybe this could be something that you start a go fund me up for - to essentially purchase a couple of extra trolleys for the store. Put a post on local Facebook groups etc.
The store should keep these trolleys separate from the regular ones and you have to request it - so they don't get used by someone who doesn't need one.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 21/10/2023 19:40

The adapted trolleys at my local supermarket are kept with the mobility buggies - so inside which lessens the chance of them being stolen and also lessens the chance of them being misuseD by people who don’t need them.

I know the trolley u mean I use it for my 6 year old! Our local shop doesn't actually have one so had to put her in regular trolley I asked them and manager said she would look into it, it's super frustrating ! As I've used them in other supermarkets

ohtowinthelottery · 21/10/2023 19:45

If you just needed "a few bits " then why didn't you just take your child in their pushchair/buggy/ wheelchair and use a basket?
I say this as someone who regularly had to balance a basket whilst pushing a wheelchair for my DD who was not able to sit unsupported.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 21/10/2023 19:45

This one is kept inside but I think the problem is that it is left outside by the shoppers who use them and I can see why, my little one like many children who have a disability, has epilepsy and getting the trolley back to the store once I have unloaded the shopping into the car means leaving him unattended in the car which I hate doing.

Because one of those few bits was a pumpkin!

I had to do quite a lot of shopping and did have a delivery booked that day, but they cancelled all of them due to a problem at head office so needed to go shopping with daughter and needed to take younger daughter and had her walking , in my shop both my girls were being difficult as waiting long time and the manager I spoke to earlier about trolley actually gave them 2 magazines to keep them quiet which lovely. I've been having delivery since so not sure if they have new trolley yet! Also know the question wasn't directed at me

Privatemedical246 · 21/10/2023 19:50

I think you need to take this feedback to head office and about the logistics of then bringing the trolley back and leaving a disabled person unattended. Surely the trolleys to be stored by the blue badge areas as I presume most people who need the trolleys are likely to have blue badge? I could be wrong though.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 21/10/2023 19:55

@Privatemedical246 It's stored inside the shop by the baby changing room, if they are left outside they get nicked.
