Private school bursary

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of applying for a bursary from a
Private school? What kind of things do they look into? Do they want copies of bank statements/ credit card statements etc?

my son is really struggling at school and I am considering going down this route….

id like to hear people’s experiences if they’ve been through it. The thought of it makes me feel very anxious…

A while ago now, but we had to fill in forms and provide bank statements. We have no assets, council rent and at times on benefits, 3 x DC all got full bursaries. Only thing to consider is the extras. For us, the uniform was cheaper than the local grammar/ comp but some can be eye watering. Music, drama etc can add to the bill.

Good luck.

Yes it is very thorough. Three months bank statements. Rental agreements, mortgage, what cars you own.

We are financially 'okay' but would never be able to afford my sons school fees at £20k.

We received a 70% bursary.

I think it's worth giving it a go.

When he started we did spend nearly £1000 on his uniform and everything else though. But lots of schools have second hand uniforms.

Only other thing is things like school trips. They go all over the world 😂

Thank you for the advice!

Sorry to say I'd think very carefully before making the move. Bursary funds are likely to reduce due to roll reductions when VAT is added to fees. 😞

I’m afraid I agree with @wigywhoo. Most private schools will need to stop, or significantly reduce bursaries once Labour add VAT to school fees. Worth bearing in mind at least.

Yes they will go over your finances, tax returns etc with a fine tooth comb every year.

As a full-fee paying parent, with hindsight, I can say. We, full fee paying parents, are mugs. Cunning people who lie about their circumstances get bursaries just like that. We pay for them. Only we don't go on holidays, don't renovate, don't upgrade, don't drive good cars. They do - they are on bursaries.

I doubt it is the majority who are doing what you speak of, so please don’t begrudge some who deserve to be there.

What sort of earnings would they expect bursary applicants to have? Does anybody know please?
