Omaze houses - do you know anyone who won?

Do you know anyone who has won one of those fully furnished Omaze houses? Did they move in?

Some of them look amazing but others seem to be houses that might be difficult to sell due to location or odd lay outs.

Yes I know a winner and as far as I know he’s planning to move in - if he hasn’t already.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 20/10/2023 22:32

Will they be moving to a new part of the country to live in the house?

They always seem like an albatross to me. If I won (I don't play, so it's all fantasy), I'd probably have a holiday in it, take any furniture I liked, and sell it for 30%-50% less than they quote it's worth just to get rid. The running costs of a giant house must be crippling.

WhisperingAngle · 20/10/2023 22:38

They will be moving a considerable distance, yes.

Nagado · 20/10/2023 22:50

I think I remember seeing something on their website that tells you whether the winners moved in or sold up. The one on the riverside in Devon is currently on Rightmove.

WinterVibes · 20/10/2023 23:21

The one in Fowey, Cornwall was on Rightmove recently (haven't checked, may still be on there) I read about the lady who won it but was selling as wanted to gift money to her children and grandchildren. I had a good nosey around it on Rightmove, was gorgeous !

reallyworriedjobhunter · 21/10/2023 07:13

It's all about selling a total fantasy really isn't it. We'd never be able to afford to run a home like that even if we did win.

And the Fowey house, I thought it was lovely inside but do feel a bit sorry for the people living over the water who have to look at the house every day. It's not exactly sympathetic.

I entered the London draw as I live not far away and could have moved in without changing the rest of my life too much. The family who did win it have moved in and I think that's lovely.

I don't think there are many winners who do move in though.

I loved the house on Fowey. Am quite liking the Chelsea house too even though it’s small compared to the others!

SoddingWeddings · 04/11/2023 12:27

We would have loved the Fowey house and only a short move for us! Definitely one to live in, not sell for our lives and location, but the money would have had to be spent on separating it out with two annexes to rent out and renting out the studio etc.

We haven't one the Gleneagles one but I'd have done the same as a PP - strip it of items I like, sell the house with or without furniture and buy something I could actually live in. That one was a monstrosity.

I'm going to buy tickets for the Chelsea one, but DH wouldn't want to live there. I would though, as it would mean I could apply for so many specialist jobs in the Civil Service that I want to do but am currently unable to manage with the crap wages and central London locations. Or maybe do the same thing of stripping it and selling it and buying a flat in London. Dunno.

Is it true they do credit checks on finalists and select ones with no debts to win?

MsFogi · 04/11/2023 12:29

I take it the winners have to pay capital gains tax if they already own a house (or need to move in for long enough to avoid paying CGT)?

Friedgreentomatoparty · 04/11/2023 12:31

And what does vaccination attestation mean ??!!

I don't know about the credit side of it, but I think they are trying to avoid the "Lotto Rapist" type headlines. Which is all very well, but is very discriminatory and not in keeping with a genuine lottery IMO.

It's the bit that sticks in my craw - would I be deemed unworthy because I've got £10k on finance for a car after ours got written off by a deer? 🤔

NoSquirrels · 04/11/2023 12:34

I’d imagine these are rules designed to cover many countries and jurisdictions, and since the Covid-19 pandemic lots of places had rule’s & restrictions around vaccine status.

I’d be happy enough to disclose and sell my soul for a free Chelsea townhouse, all things considered.

I'm sure it says that on the terms and conditions. Pretty shit really that they discriminate against people who probably need it most

TorroFerney · 04/11/2023 12:55

I found out a few months ago that I work with someone who won. Not from them and it’s a big organisation.

They should have clear entry criteria then for the competition itself rather than taking everyone’s money when the vast majority aren’t even eligible to win !
